Wrexham fell to defeat on Tuesday night as Phil Parkinson’s return to Reading ended in a 2-0 defeat on the road.

Wrexham headed to Berkshire in good form having taken seven points from the last three games.

Phil Parkinson watched on as Wrexham beat Rotherham United 1-0 on Saturday with Sam Smith scoring the only goal.

Parkinson and Smith returned to face Reading on Tuesday night but suffered a painful defeat.

Wrexham were beaten 2-0 by Reading with Harvey Knibbs and Lewis Wing finding the back of the net.

This was a night to forget for Wrexham, squandering a chance to overtake Wycombe Wanderers in the League One promotion race.

Reading ace pokes fun at Sam Smith

The game not only saw Parkinson return to the club where he became a hero in his playing days, but saw striker Smith head back to Reading too.

Wrexham signed Smith in January with a club-record deal agreed for him to arrive from Reading.

Smith has scored twice in a Wrexham shirt so far but was unable to find the net against his former club.

Almost straight after the final whistle, Reading ace Amadou Mbengue poked some fun at the Wrexham striker.

As seen on his Instagram Live, Mbengue was celebrating alongside Reading defender Tyler Bindon.

Mbengue motioned towards Bindon’s pockets whilst saying ‘where’s Sam Smith? I can’t see him!’.

The Senegalese defender was ruled out with a knee injury so didn’t actually play in the game, but certainly loved the celebrations after the game.

Smith and Mbengue were teammates at Reading, so we would like to think that it was all in jest rather than actually taking shots at Smith just weeks after leaving the club.

Reading celebrate ‘Hollywood football’

Smith was not alone in receiving some banter following Tuesday’s defeat with Reading poking fun at Wrexham too.

Wrexham fans have become all too used to the jokes every time the team suffers defeat.

‘Stick that on your documentary’ is the popular quip and Reading have now joined in.

Posting a clip of Wing’s goal, Reading captioned the video ‘Hollywood football’ – a clear reference towards owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Wrexham will just have to take this one on the chin and hit back in the best way possibly by beating promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers this weekend, which would make fans forget about Tuesday’s defeat quickly.
