Wrexham are gearing up for another huge League One clash as Phil Parkinson takes his side to face Wigan Athletic.

The League One promotion race is entering its final sprint, and Wrexham currently hold that crucial second spot in the table.

Wrexham beat Burton Albion 3-0 last weekend to open up a six-point gap over third-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

However, Wycombe hit back with a victory over Huddersfield Town, winning their game in hand to cut Wrexham’s lead back to three points.

Both sides now have five games to play, and Wrexham’s final push starts with a trip to Wigan Athletic this weekend.

Steven Fletcher boasts an exceptional record against Wigan Athletic

Wrexham beat Wigan earlier in the season, securing a 2-1 victory over the Latics on December 29.

Ryan Barnett put Wrexham in front before Joe Hugill appeared to have rescued a point for Wigan with just over 10 minutes to play.

Wrexham grabbed a late winner, though, with Steven Fletcher firing into the net after taking down James McClean’s cross.

This was yet another moment of real quality from Fletcher, and it’s not only something Wrexham fans are familiar with but also Wigan fans.

If you look through Fletcher’s career history, he has scored more goals against Wigan than any other opponent.

Fletcher has scored nine times in just 13 outings against Wigan, becoming something of a bogeyman for the Latics.

Fletcher scored three times in two games for Sunderland against Wigan, twice in three games for Wolves, once in two games for Burnley, twice in four games for Sheffield Wednesday and now once for Wrexham.

That is a quite remarkable record; Fletcher’s next highest tally is six goals Kilmarnock, but across 22 games.

Fletcher’s record against Wigan is truly incredible, and having scored against Burton Albion last week, he will be keen to add to that tally this weekend.

Phil Parkinson faces striking decision against Wigan Athletic

January signings Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez have become Parkinson’s first-choice strike pairing ever since their arrivals.

Smith was superb against Burton Albion, but Rodriguez suffered a first-half injury and was substituted in favour of Fletcher.

Parkinson has offered an update on Rodriguez, suggesting that he just had a tight calf and the situation is ‘only very minor’.

Rodriguez may well be fit for the weekend trip to Wigan, allowing Fletcher to continue his super-sub role from the bench.

If Rodriguez isn’t ready to go, Fletcher may well be the next man up – especially with Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer out of favour.
