Wrexham are preparing for a tough trip to Wigan Athletic as their promotion run in continues.

Wycombe fans are buoyed after their 1-0 win over Huddersfield closed the gap to just three points to the final League One automatic promotion spot and heaped the pressure back on Wrexham.

Eoghan O’Connell has praised Wrexham’s mentality in their recent promotion races and Phil Parkinson will be using his experience to keep his squad focussed on their own results and performances.

Parkinson knows Wigan carry a ‘threat’ and will be hoping that he can continue to keep an unchanged side for the clash as he provided an update on the fitness of striker Jay Rodriguez and midfielder George Dobson.

Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham fitness update

Wrexham fans weren’t convinced by Rodriguez’s substitution during the 3-0 win over Burton Albion but Parkinson has now revealed that the striker was suffering with a tight calf.

Speaking to the Leader, Parkinson has provided an update on Rodriguez’s condition and will monitor him throughout the build up to the Wigan clash.

Parkinson stated: “Jay had a bit of a tight calf but nothing too serious, we got him scanned straight away on Sunday and it’s only very minor. We will just keep monitoring him as the week progresses.”

The Red Dragons boss has also given an update on Dobson after he was injured during a challenge which saw Charlie Webster receive a straight red card early in the match.

Parkinson explained: “Dobbo has had stitches in his shin but he won’t be training the early part of this week, we could have stitched him up at half-time and he stayed on,

“He wasn’t that bad, but we were making changes anyway and with Dobbo having blood coming out of his shin, it was the right choice to bring him off.”

Wrexham squad struggling with illness

Parkinson also revealed that Sam Smith was struggling with illness before his heroics against Burton Albion and that more members of the squad have missed training due to being struck down.

The Wrexham manager stated: “Sam Smith was ill towards the end of last week and a couple of lads missed training yesterday due to illness. We have got to make sure this week that we get as many players available for selection as possible for the weekend.”

Smith’s moments of brilliance were the difference in Wrexham’s latest victory and Parkinson will be keen for his record signing to recover back to full health ahead of the clash with Wigan.

Wrexham’s strength is their squad depth and it seems that may be needed in the final few weeks as the club desperately try to clamber over the line to promotion.
