Wrexham welcomed Hull City to the Racecourse Ground in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Wrexham were hoping to better last season’s EFL Cup efforts by progressing past the first round and Phil Parkinson made eleven changes from the defeat at Southampton.
Elliot Lee put the home side in front just after the half hour mark when his deflected strike found the back of the net.
Oli McBurnie equalised five minutes later as he squeezed home from close range after a good cross from Cody Drameh.
Hull looked to have taken the game away from Wrexham in the second half as goals from Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks put them 3-1 up.
However, in an extraordinary passage of play in stoppage time, substitute Ollie Palmer came up with two late headers to send the tie to penalties.
Jack Marriott scored the winning penalty as Wrexham won 5-3 and progressed into the second round of the EFL Cup.

Winners from Wrexham’s clash with Hull City
Elliot Lee
Lee is expected to leave Wrexham this summer and should this prove to be his final appearance at the Racecourse Ground, he has had a fitting end to his wonderful career at the club.
The midfielder found himself in some space just inside the box and after dummying a shot to fool one defender he saw his deflected strike give the home side the lead.
Lee was busy in midfield and sent a reminder that there is still an immensely gifted footballer in there for whichever club he ends up at before the transfer deadline.
Arthur Okonkwo
Eyebrows were certainly raised against Southampton when Parkinson chose Danny Ward as his number one over Arthur Okonkwo.
Okonkwo was outstanding for Wrexham last season in keeping 19 clean sheets in the promotion campaign but was dropped for the season opener.
He gave his manager a timely reminder of his ability during this match as he pulled off a string of fine saves, including an excellent stop from Kasey Palmer in the second half at full stretch.
Okonkwo will now be hoping that his performance can earn him a place back in the league side at home to West Brom in their next encounter.
Ollie Palmer
Has Ollie Palmer just saved his Wrexham career in a matter of minutes? Injuries to Kieffer Moore and Jay Rodriguez suddenly leave Wrexham short of a target man up top.
He showed exactly what he can bring to the side in his 20 minute cameo from the bench, caused defenders all sorts of problems and held the ball up well.
With the game running away from Wrexham, Palmer planted two spectacular headers into the back of the net and rescued his side in the tie.
To cap off his evening, Palmer also scored in the penalty shoot-out. Plans about to change for Mr Parkinson?
Losers from Wrexham’s clash with Hull City
Eoghan O’Connell
Eoghan O’Connell did not have the best audition to prove that he can be adequate cover in the Championship this season.
Playing slightly out of position on the right-hand side of the back three, the defender looked nervy in possession on a number of occasions during the first half and his lack of pace was exposed.
Ryan Hardie
Ryan Hardie was a constant thorn in the Hull City backline and the new signing worked tirelessly throughout the match.
However, his performance warranted a goal and he had a glorious opportunity to score his first competitive goal for the club just after half time.
Ryan Longman put a delicious cross on a plate for Hardie, who failed to hit the target with a free header, middle of the goal just six yards out.
