Wrexham have now opened up a six-point gap in the race for second place in League One after beating Burton Albion on Saturday.

The end of the League One season is now in sight and Wrexham are closing in on a place in the Championship.

Wrexham beat Burton Albion 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to not only remain ahead of Wycombe Wanderers, but open up a six-point gap.

Wycombe lost at Reading to hand Wrexham the initiative in the League One promotion race, leaving Mike Dodds to curse a ‘harsh week’ for the Chairboys.

Wrexham’s three-point lead has now been extended and with just a handful of games to go, Phil Parkinson is closing in on a third straight promotion.

Three-goal Wrexham display comes at the perfect time

Saturday could have been an awkward encounter.

Burton Albion were reduced to 10 men fairly early on as Charlie Webster’s foul left George Dobson with a nasty injury.

The Brewers were never likely to be gung-ho with 11 men, never mind when reduced to 10.

Wrexham toiled for a little while, but once the opening goal came, Parkinson’s side coasted to a 3-0 victory.

Remarkably, that was Wrexham’s first three-goal League One performance since beating Exeter City 3-0 on November 23.

Wrexham had gone 25 League One games without scoring three or more goals, with games tending to be pretty tight affairs in recent months.

This three-goal showing certainly came at the right time though, as the goal difference between Wrexham and Wycombe showed a five-goal advantage for the Chairboys.

Wrexham’s win – coupled with Wycombe’s defeat – means Wrexham have really eaten into that goal difference and are now only one goal behind Wycombe.

Goal difference could be important for Wrexham

Wycombe have a game in hand as they take on Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

That does present an opportunity to get open up an advantage on goal difference again, but bringing it down to one goal in this situation was huge for Wrexham.

Should the two teams end up level on points heading into the final day, Wrexham would not want to be four or five goals behind.

That 3-0 victory just gives Wrexham a timely boost with goal difference and will hopefully help take a potential tie-breaker away from Wycombe.

Wrexham are ahead on points right now, and Parkinson will be confident of staying ahead of Wycombe in the coming weeks, but the goals are just another welcome bonus as the end of the season draws closer.
