Wrexham had a very active summer transfer window, and one player they tried to sign has struggled for minutes this season.

Wrexham ended the 2025 summer transfer window with 13 new players, and what is essentially a brand-new starting eleven when everyone is fit.

One key area that was strengthened heavily over the summer was defence, with five players, including three centre-backs, arriving.

Callum Doyle, Conor Coady and Dom Hyam were signed for a combined £9.7m as new centre-back options.

Before that trio put pen to paper, however, the Dragons were eyeing another experienced name in Ben Davies.

Wrexham held talks for Tottenham defender Ben Davies

Early in the summer, a new left-sided centre-back seemed to be a clear priority.

Aaron Cresswell was linked to Wrexham after he left West Ham United on a free transfer.

The Englishman ended up joining their Championship rivals, Stoke City, instead.

Elsewhere, Wrexham held talks with Ben Davies about a transfer as he was also expected to become a free agent at the end of June.

However, Tottenham Hotspur extended Davies’ contract, keeping him in London for another year.

But the Welsh international, who signed from Swansea City for £10m in 2014, as per Sky Sports, has struggled to break into the team since new manager Thomas Frank arrived.

In fact, the 32-year-old has played zero minutes of club football in 2025/26 so far, being left on the bench in four Premier League outings and not even making the matchday squad versus Brighton and Hove Albion.

Do Wrexham need another centre-back

Wrexham could spend £10m during the 2026 January transfer window.

However, it does seem unlikely, barring any injuries, that the Dragons will be eyeing another centre-back in the winter.

Their squad is already well-stocked, and if they do make signings, a couple of other positions may be the priority.

Some form of competition for Kieffer Moore is required, as nobody else in the team really offers what he does up front.

Elsewhere, another pacey left-wing-back may be required after Liberato Cacace’s recurring injury issues.
