Wrexham have not made the dream start to life in the Championship after 43 years away from the second tier of English football.

There have been signs in the opening five matches for Wrexham so far this Championship campaign, and there is an argument to be made that a different bounce of the ball results, could have been more positive.

Wrexham made 13 summer signings to bring quality to the side to be able to compete at this level, and it may take time to see this; however, as pressure starts to mount on Phil Parkinson, time is not something he seems to have much of left.

New signing Ben Sheaf has seemingly identified the solution to all their early-season problems despite only being at Wrexham for two weeks.

Ben Sheaf believes Wrexham just need to solve their defensive problems, and they will see results

Ben Sheaf signed for Wrexham this summer from Coventry City, and he finally made his debut for the club, coming off the bench in their 3-1 defeat to QPR.

The midfielder addressed some of the issues that Wrexham currently face following their summer business, the biggest being cohesion and getting the squad to quickly come together, particularly defensively; however, he is encouraged by their quality in attack, as he spoke to The Leader.

He said: “We’re still getting to know each other as players; we’re developing relationships with each other, but it is just doing the basics well.

“You do the basics well; you give yourself a platform to win.

“Sometimes creating chances is the hardest thing, and we didn’t lack that. We’ll continue to do that, but you can’t take that for granted.

“If we can tighten up defensively and keep more clean sheets, we’ll be fine.”

Ben Sheaf has quickly settled into life in North Wales

While the rural beauty, the language and the city are all huge changes from what Ben Sheaf is used to, as he left Coventry City for Wrexham, he has seemingly taken to North Wales with ease.

He admitted that he has been helped by the fact he knew so many of his new teammates from his time elsewhere in the English pyramid.

Speaking to The Leader, he said: “I played with Matty James, Callum Doyle and Dominic Hyam at Coventry.

“I was with George Dobson a little bit when I was younger at Arsenal and Elliot Lee when I was younger than that at West Ham.

“A really good bunch of lads and a good culture in the dressing room. The success the club’s had – you don’t have that success if you don’t have a good culture in the dressing room.

“It is just looking to continue developing the relationships on and off the pitch, and I think we’ll do well.”
