Wrexham will take on Cardiff City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as Phil Parkinson faces a major Welsh derby.

Wrexham beat Reading 2-0 on Tuesday night to book a passage into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Wednesday night brought the fourth round draw, and Wrexham fans have been given a fascinating tie with Cardiff City.

It’s more than 20 years since Wrexham and Cardiff last faced each other in competitive action, but a Welsh derby is now heading to the STōK Cae Ras.

Cardiff City’s Callum Robinson on Wrexham clash

Phil Parkinson wanted a big Premier League side in the fourth round draw, but nobody will be complaining about a clash with Cardiff.

Wrexham take on Derby County in the Championship this weekend, but it’s difficult to stop the attention turning to that Cardiff battle.

Cardiff star Callum Robinson is already being asked questions about facing Wrexham, more than a month out from the game taking place.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Robinson suggested that he and Cardiff have nothing to be afraid of as they prepare to take on Parkinson’s side.

Robinson praised Wrexham’s summer transfer business, as Parkinson brought 13 quality signings to North Wales.

Robinson noted that Wrexham have a ‘big squad’ at Parkinson’s disposal, but Cardiff have already seen off Premier League opposition by beating Burnley.

Wrexham named a 24-man Championship squad, but Parkinson’s squad is packed with senior players, while Cardiff have used several young players this season.

That depth is presumably what Robinson means here, but he remains confident that Cardiff can pick up a result.

“No, not really. I don’t think,” said Robinson when asked if Wrexham are favourites to win the game.

“I think the way we’ve started the season, we’re in a positive mindset, which was shown on Tuesday night against a top team. And it’s shown throughout the season.

“It’ll be a good challenge for us. They’re in the Championship, they’ve brought a lot of players in, they’ve got a big squad. Fair play to them, they’ve got up there, and if you get to the Championship, obviously, you’ve earned it.

“But I think, us boys, we’ve started fast, we’ve done really well, and I feel like there’s nothing to fear. There was probably more fear of going Tuesday night to Burnley, away against a Premier League team, than there is probably going to Wrexham. We’ll give it a go and try and get through to the quarters,” he added.

Wrexham looked at Callum Robinson

Robinson could easily have been playing for Wrexham against Cardiff in this upcoming Carabao Cup clash.

Reports over the summer suggested that Wrexham were interested in signing Robinson following Cardiff’s relegation from the Championship.

The Irish international is a proven Championship goalscorer and found the net 12 times last season despite Cardiff’s relegation.

Wrexham ended up going in a different direction, instead landing Ryan Hardie, Josh Windass, Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead to bolster Parkinson’s attacking options.

Parkinson will be well aware of Robinson’s talent, and will hope that he doesn’t have a telling impact against Wrexham in October.
