Wrexham returned to League One action on Thursday and were expected to pick up a win.

The Red Dragons had a full 12 days to prepare for the clash thanks to two of their matches being postponed.

This allowed a few key stars such as Elliot Lee and Jack Marriott to build up fitness and be included in the squad.

Neither player was able to do enough to help the away side come out on top on the night, however.

Wrexham fans had a lot to say about Steven Fletcher versus Shrewsbury Town, with the Scotsman scoring his sixth League One goal of the season.

However, his work at the top end of the pitch was swiftly undone by the dire display of Eoghan O’Connell on the night.

O’Connell made two big mistakes and was largely to blame for Wrexham losing 2-1 to Shrewsbury.

Wrexham expert’s verdict on Shrewsbury Town defeat

Had Wrexham come out on top in midweek, they would have, at least temporarily, climbed to the top of League One.

However, they now sit behind Wycombe Wanderers in third place with a worse goal difference having played a game more.

The gap between themselves and Birmingham City is likely to extend to five points on Friday evening as well when the Blues take to the field.

Automatic promotion is still on the cards but it’s so clear that Wrexham need to up their game if they are to match the fellow top teams.

Now, following the match, journalists Nathan Salt and Rich Fay who run the Rob. Ryan. Red podcast have taken to X/Twitter to issue their verdict and send a clear message over signings.

Who are Wrexham looking to sign in January transfer window

We are now 17 days into the winter window but at present, Wrexham are yet to make any signings.

The likes of Huddersfield Town have acted swiftly to strengthen their squad and could overtake the Welsh side in the table very soon as a result.

Most recently, Wrexham were linked with Michael Smith of Sheffield Wednesday – a player Parkinson wanted over the summer.

Jayden Danns of Liverpool is of interest as well but he’s expected to have plenty of suitors this month.

Wrexham are next in action on Thursday against Birmingham City and having at least one player signed by then is surely a must.
