‘Everyone knows’ – Why Wrexham star was named Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s favourite player by Andy Cannon

Andy Cannon had some interesting thoughts as to why one Wrexham star was Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s favourite player.

Wrexham have been completely transformed under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Red Dragons spent 15 years languishing in the National League, but thanks to the backing of the North American duo, they have risen all the way up to the top end of League One.

Recuritment under Phil Parkinson has been excellent, and Wrexham have broken their transfer record several times.

In August 2024, Ollie Rathbone became the club’s most expensive signing before Modou Faal surpassed him just a few weeks later in a £590,000 deal.

Then, in late January, Wrexham signed Sam Smith in a move understood to be in excess of seven figures.

Said trio are not the only big names to arrive at the Racecourse Ground in recent years, however.

Why Arthur Okonkwo is Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s favourite player according to Andy Cannon

Arthur Okonkwo initially joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal in September 2023 for the remainder of that season.

The goalkeeper played a key role in the club’s promotion from League Two and has since returned to Wales on a permanent basis.

Okonkwo arrived on a free transfer in July 2024 when his contract was up, but comments made by Andy Cannon in January 2025 suggest he may not have been as cheap as his non-existent transfer fee suggested.

In a video for Sky Sports, Cannon, Okonkwo, Elliot Lee, Lewis Brunt and Ryan Barnett were asked to rank each other in order of who is the owner’s favourite.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper was instantly placed at number one and asked, “How can I be there?” to which Cannon replied: “Everyone knows the reason why.”

After sorting out the full order, Okonkwo then questioned: “Why am I one?” to which Cannon once again responded: “I think they had to dig in their pockets a bit to get him.”

Arthur Okonkwo praises Wrexham mentality

In what would be a major achievement, the Welsh side are now pushing to make it three promotions on the spin this term.

A tight battle for second place with Wycombe Wanderers is ongoing, but Okonkwo has praised Wrexham’s new mentality when playing away from home recently.

He said: “Our away form is really good going into these two matches.

“We’ve changed our mentality on the road, and it’s good to see us getting wins. Reading will be another big challenge. We know how good they are. We’ll give it our best and show the same sort of focus [as Saturday].”

Parkinson’s men have won four on the bounce away from the Racecourse and are looking to make it five on Tuesday when they take on Reading.

With Wycombe not in action during midweek, Wrexham will go into their meeting on Saturday in second place if they manage to see off The Royals on March 11th.
