Wrexham’s rise to the upper echelons of League One has been incredible but fans will not forget the National League days before Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds turned up.

Wrexham sit third in League One right now and are seriously gunning for a third promotion in a row.

This would be unprecedented stuff with Phil Parkinson keeping Wrexham within touching distance of an automatic promotion spot.

Rob McElhenney is confident of another promotion but there is a real shootout on the cards with second-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham fans may still feel like this is a dream but Championship football at the STōK Cae Ras next season is a real possibility.

The National League days are long gone for Wrexham but one player who missed out on the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds experience is shining elsewhere.

Former Wrexham ace Akil Wright reinventing himself in Scotland

Back in 2017, Wrexham pounced to snap up Akil Wright on loan from Fleetwood Town.

A former Sheffield United youth talent, Wright impressed at Ilkeston Town to land his move to Fleetwood in 2015.

Loans to AFC Fylde and Barrow followed before Wrexham pounced, eventually signing him permanently in 2018 after a successful loan spell.

Wrexham fans will remember Wright as a midfielder who managed seven goals in 95 games across all competitions for the club.

Wright departed for York City in 2020 – just a year before Wrexham’s Hollywood takeover – and then Stockport County, becoming prominent as a centre back in that time.

Now 28, Wright is reinventing himself once again with the former Wrexham ace now playing another new position.

Wright is now featuring as a right wing back for Ross County and is enjoying a fine season in Scotland, just as Sam Dalby is shining at Dundee United.

Ross County boss Don Cowie has hailed Wright whilst speaking to The Press and Journal, suggesting that he has been ‘outstanding’ this season.

Cowie noted that he could play Wright anywhere on the pitch thanks to his athletic abilities and hailed him for excelling in his new role against Motherwell last week.

“I think Akil has been outstanding for us this season – so consistent,” said Cowie.

“Unfortunately Michee Efete is injured, and Jimmy Brown wasn’t involved as he had a family bereavement. I was thinking about who to play there, and I genuinely feel you could play Akil anywhere on the pitch and he would do a really good job for the team.

“I thought he did that after maybe 15 to 20 minutes getting used to the new position. His sheer physicality and mobility on the pitch allows him to be effective anywhere.

“He did another good job for the team playing slightly out of position,” he added.

Akil Wright scores superb goal

Wright started in that right wing back role against Dundee over the weekend and produced a moment of serious quality.

With the score at 1-1, Wright produced a fine bicycle to put Ross County in front and tee up a 3-1 win.

Ross County fans hailed Wright on BBC Sport, suggesting that he is ‘playing like a prime Cafu’ right now.

One fan writer for BBC Sport even suggested that Wright is a ‘very strong candidate’ for Player of the Season at Ross County.

Wrexham fans surely can’t have imagined Wright in this kind of role or scoring that kind of goal, but it’s all clicking for him in Scotland right now.

Wright narrowly missed out on the McElhenney and Reynolds era but having found a home in Scotland it all seems to have worked out for him away from the STōK Cae Ras.
