Wrexham are pushing for promotion to the Championship, but there has been a managerial sacking elsewhere in League One.

Wrexham beat Exeter City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to move another step closer to a third straight promotion.

Ollie Rathbone and Jay Rodriguez found the net, handing Wrexham another victory in pursuit of a place in the Championship.

Wycombe Wanderers may still have a game in hand, but Wrexham have the points on the board.

That is the most important thing for Phil Parkinson right now, with the Wrexham boss moving closer and closer to a remarkable achievement.

The end of the season is in sight, and whilst Wrexham are fully focused on promotion, one League One side must now find a new manager.

Former Wrexham coach departs as Rotherham United sack Steve Evans

Rotherham United appointed Steve Evans as their new manager back in April 2024, bringing him back to the club form Stevenage.

Evans joined up ahead of Rotherham’s relegation from the Championship, and the Scot was brought in to try and mastermind a return to the second tier.

Rotherham made a raft of summer signings, but their season has been a major disappointment.

The Millers sit 16th in the League One table after being hammered 4-0 by Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon.

Evans has now paid the price, as Rotherham have announced his departure with immediate effect.

Evans’ coaching team have been axed too, which includes former Wrexham coach Gary Mills.

You hear that name and go straight to the Gary Mills who managed Wrexham for 18 months between April 2015 and October 2016.

Mills arrived after Kevin Wilkin’s departure and, curiously, his assistant was also called Gary Mills.

Mills served as Wilkin’s assistant in 49 games at Wrexham before his departure, eventually moving on to become Rugby Town boss.

After spells with King’s Lynn, Corby, MK Dons and Coventry City, Evans brought Mills to Rotherham last summer, having served as Burton Albion’s caretaker boss for seven games last season.

Their time together at Rotherham is now over, though, and former Wrexham man Mills will seek his next coaching opportunity elsewhere.

Steve Evans pointed to refereeing decisions against Wrexham

Evans just hasn’t found the results this season, but his two defeats against Wrexham caused him some frustration.

Wrexham beat Rotherham 1-0 away from home back in October before repeating the trick at the STōK Cae Ras in March.

Evans branded referee Ben Atkinson ‘simply awful’ after the result in October, suggesting that he was constantly giving 50:50 decisions in Wrexham’s favour.

March saw a similar situation with Evans slating referee Jeremy Simpson for giving too many decisions to Wrexham.

Evans clearly wasn’t impressed with either defeat against Wrexham and now finds himself seeking a new managerial opportunity as the summer draws closer.
