Peterborough United have backed up beating Wrexham in the EFL Trophy final with a win over Birmingham City.

Wrexham are chasing promotion to the Championship but also had dreams of reaching the EFL Trophy final.

Phil Parkinson appeared destined for Wembley as Wrexham were 2-0 up against Peterborough United.

Wrexham were stunned by Peterborough, though, and ended up losing on penalties after conceding two second-half goals.

The opportunity to face Birmingham City had been squandered, with Wrexham throwing away a winning position in ridiculous fashion.

Wrexham drew at Wigan Athletic on Saturday, but Sunday afternoon saw Peterborough head into the EFL Trophy final against Birmingham City.

Wrexham hero Darren Ferguson makes EFL Trophy history

We can’t really call Wrexham and Birmingham a rivalry, despite all the celebrity hype around the two clubs this season.

Still, many Wrexham fans would have been cheering Peterborough on, partly for a sense of schadenfreude and partly to support Darren Ferguson.

Ferguson was a Wrexham hero in his playing days, racking up more than 300 league appearances after joining from Sparta Rotterdam in 1999.

Ferguson’s Posh were underdogs in Sunday’s Wembley final, but they produced a superb performance to win 2-0.

Harley Mills and Hector Kyprianou found the net, handing Peterborough the victory against all odds.

This win means that Ferguson has become the first manager ever to win the EFL Trophy on three occasions.

Ferguson guided Peterborough to the EFL Trophy in 2014, 2024 and now 2025 to make history in the competition.

This win also means that Ferguson’s Peterborough have become the first team ever to win the EFL Trophy in back-to-back seasons, just for another slice of history.

Don’t forget Darren Ferguson’s Wrexham success in the EFL Trophy

Not only has Ferguson won the EFL Trophy three times as a manager, but also once as a player with Wrexham to take his total tally to four.

Long before the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era, Wrexham won the EFL Trophy – then named the LDV Vans Trophy – in 2005.

Ferguson joined Juan Ugarte on the scoresheet to beat Southend United 2-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff after the game went to extra time.

Wrexham were relegated from League One that season after entering administration earlier in the campaign.

Those were dark times for Wrexham, but fans can still remember that final victory as a bright spot in a difficult season.

Ferguson’s love affair with the EFL Trophy continues, and Wrexham fans will surely love seeing him win another trophy – especially at Birmingham’s expense.
