He once mocked Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, now Wrexham are relying on him for a huge League One promotion favour

Wrexham have put themselves in a very strong position to fight all the way for a place in the Championship next season following a 1-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers.

Phil Parkinson’s side moved three points clear of their promotion rivals into second place in the League One table but having played a game more.

Wycombe were in awe of Arthur Okonkwo during their defeat at Adams Park as the Wrexham goalkeeper made a string of fine saves to preserve his fourth clean sheet in the last five games.

Rob McElhenney praised Wycombe for their support in a medical emergency involving a fan at the game and the Chairboys still have promotion in their own hands heading into their extra game. They come up against one of Wrexham’s old adversaries.

Wrexham relying on Steve Evans to help with League One promotion favour

Wycombe’s game in hand sees them come up against a Rotherham side managed by Steve Evans. Wrexham beat Rotherham 1-0 earlier this month thanks to another winning goal from Sam Smith.

Evans has mocked Wrexham in the past calling the club the ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ of League One and once stated: “Birmingham are the boys with the big money. Wrexham have also got money, but they’ve got the movie stars as well.”

The Rotherham manager was not too pleased with his side’s defeat against the Red Dragons recently either, Evans complained about the referee during his defeat at the Racecourse Ground.

Now Wrexham will be hoping that the Millers gaffer can focus on securing his side a much-needed three points against Wycombe – a result that would put promotion back in the hands of Parkinson’s men.

Wrexham have a kinder fixture list on paper compared to Wycombe

Nothing can be taken for granted at this stage and it has already been proven this season that there are no easy games in this division.

However, in the remaining games, Wrexham are set to face just two of the current top 10 in the League One table, whereas Wycombe are currently set to face six of those sides.

Parkinson will be well aware that teams fighting for their lives at the bottom end of the division will be just as tough as teams gunning for the play off places however, the Red Dragons do have the more favourable fixture list.

Points are not won on paper though and more performances like the second half at Adams Park will be required to secure their target of Championship football next season.
