‘He’d be a great fit’… Championship boss admits he would love to sign one Wrexham transfer target this summer

One of Wrexham’s transfer targets is now being eyed up by a rival Championship club, whose manager knows him very well indeed.

Already this summer we’ve seen Wrexham linked alongside a number of clubs in certain transfer pursuits, in a theme that could become quite common throughout the summer transfer window.

But certain links have shone a light on just how far Phil Parkinson’s side have come in the last few years: for example, Wrexham are rivalling Valencia for the signing of Lewis O’Brien from Premier League Nottingham Forest.

The Dragons have several new and exciting names on their transfer radar but as their rise up the Football League continues, the race to sign quality players only becomes more difficult. That looks set to be the case with Harry Darling.

Wrexham are interested in signing Darling this summer as he nears the end of his Swansea City contract.

Liam Manning admits he wants to sign Wrexham transfer target Harry Darling

Darling, 25, is already hot property for teams in the UK with Rangers now rumoured to be interested in signing Darling this summer, along with Wrexham, Birmingham City, and Norwich City too.

Recently, Norwich City joined the race to sign Darling. The Canaries have just appointed Liam Manning who actually managed Darling at MK Dons before, and Manning has made it quite clear that Darling could be a target for his Carrow Road revamp this summer.

Speaking during his unveiling at Norwich City, Manning said: “I had a terrific time with Harry a few years ago at MK, and I thought he was outstanding. And look, he’s really excelled at the level. For me, I think he’s someone that’s showing what he’s capable of at Championship level.”

Manning added: “I’m sure he’ll have a lot of offers but I think he’d be a great fit.” The club’s sporting director also weighed in. Ben Knapper said: “He’s somebody we’re aware of and think is a fantastic player, but I don’t know yet. He’ll have a lot of offers and there are a lot of players we’re looking at. When there are updates we’ll let you guys know.”

Wrexham appear to have their sights set on one centre-back right now

Centre-back is certainly an area that Parkinson will need to bolster with this summer. He plays with three on the pitch and whilst he has some good options as things stand in the likes of Max Cleworth, Eoghan O’Connell, and Dan Scarr, those three alone won’t keep Wrexham in the second tier next season.

Recently, Welsh legend Ben Davies has been strongly linked with a move to Wrexham. That comes despite the fact that Davies has been handed a new deal by Spurs, who are undergoing a managerial change with Thomas Frank coming in.

Wrexham are still keen on signing Davies despite him being handed a new Spurs deal, and for Parkinson, Davies could be the much better option than Darling given his Premier League experience and Welsh heritage.

Though there’s no denying that Darling would be a real coup for the Dragons this summer.
