One former Wrexham star has spoken about his time playing for the club and his opinion on Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Wrexham have undergone a fantastic transformation in recent years, embodied by their incredible three successive promotions.

During that time, the Dragons have accumulated many different players who have represented Wrexham in their impeccable rise from the National League to the Championship, where they will play next season.

One former player has spoken about his time at the club, with it being a unique one considering he was at the club before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership. The ex-Wrexham man was moved on following promotion to League Two, but he clearly holds no grudges when reflecting on his time in North Wales.

Former Wrexham star Reece Hall-Johnson gives glowing reference to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

When Reynolds and McElhenney took over at Wrexham, they were a middling National League side who often struggled to mount a serious promotion push.

However, when arriving on the scene from the USA, there were some top players at the club, including Reece Hall-Johnson, a fleety wing-back, who could also perform further forward.

In Reynolds and McElhenney’s first season with Wrexham, Hall-Johnson was an integral part of the side, notching 32 appearances and five goals in the 2021/22 season.

Speaking to the BBC, Hall-Johnson has reflected on his time at the club, where he said: “After playing for Northampton, I moved to what people call ‘the Hollywood club’ nowadays.

“That was very interesting, very fun. I spent three years at Wrexham and absolutely loved it and the owners there are fantastic.

“Everyone has seen how Ryan (Reynolds) and Rob (McElhenney) have done and it’s just a testament to them that they’ve been able to do well with the club, so I couldn’t have a bad word to say about them.

“We achieved promotion from the National League to League Two, which was really good.

“Ryan and Rob would pop over and come to watch training or be around the place, you end up seeing them as kind of your friends and people you know.”

Hall-Johnson’s role was more limited in the promotion-winning season before he was moved on to fellow National League side Barnet.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney did not mess about when first joining Wrexham

The 2021/22 season saw plenty of change for Wrexham in terms of personnel, particularly those on the pitch. Several signings meant that, compared to the campaign prior, it was an entirely new-look side.

Free transfers and loans built up the 2020/21 squad, which was a stark contrast to when Reynolds and McElhenney joined the club, who notably spent big on Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

In Reynolds and McElhenney’s first season at the club, Hall-Johnson remained an important player in the side, which reflects on just how integral he was before the changes at the club.
