Wrexham have made a great start to life in League One but Phil Parkinson will be acutely aware of a tough slog to come.
Wrexham fans had high hopes heading into League One as the club’s incredible progress under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took its next step.
The season has started impressively with Wrexham claiming a 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers on the opening weekend.
Wrexham then drew 0-0 at Bolton Wanderers before hammering Reading 3-0 at home, leaving Ruben Selles disappointed in the process.
Saturday’s trip to Peterborough United was a roaring success as Wrexham claimed a 2-0 win, securing a first away victory of the season in the process.
Jack Marriott on Wrexham opponents
One of the stars of the first few weeks of the season has been Jack Marriott.
The striker arrived at Wrexham in January and endured a slow start to life at the STōK Cae Ras, scoring just once before the end of the season.
Marriott simply had to step up this term though with Paul Mullin missing the start of the season through injury.
The former Derby County man has certainly stepped up, scoring a stunning goal against Wycombe before opening the scoring at Peterborough.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson has praised Marriott for his finishing ability and Parkinson has hailed Marriott’s intelligence alongside his work rate with the forward thriving right now.
Marriott has now spoken to TalkSPORT and was asked by Jeff Stelling about the target on Wrexham’s back from other clubs.
Not everybody loves the Hollywood story around Wrexham and that means opposing fans and players want to take Wrexham down.
Marriott suggested that games now have an ‘added edge’ as teams are desperate to beat Wrexham.
Marriott hasn’t come across resentment as such but has sensed a mentality of everybody wanting to ruin the Wrexham party.
“I’ve not seen that personally, but I feel like there’s probably and extra edge when teams come up against us because you look at the owners, you look at the journey we’re on and people want to beat us,” said Marriott.
“Wrexham are coming to town, we want to send them home packing – that’s what it seems like the mentality is when we play people. When they come to the Racecourse, it’s ‘let’s upset the party’, you see what I mean? That’s the sort of mindset that we’re coming across,” he added.
Big games to come for Wrexham
Wrexham have started the season well but there are big games to come in September.
That starts this weekend as Wrexham take on rivals Shrewsbury at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.
This is one game Wrexham fans are desperate to win, especially with no games against Chester or Tranmere Rovers in the schedule this season.
Shrewsbury will certainly have that mindset of wanting to take Wrexham down and it’s something that Marriott and co are clearly used to now.
Birmingham City are then next up with all eyes on that clash due to the North American ownership at both clubs.
Crawley Town and Leyton Orient round off September for Wrexham and Marriott will certainly hope to keep this unbeaten league run going into October.
