James McClean shares what ‘has to be the main focus’ for Wrexham in crucial Charlton meeting

Wrexham will clash with Charlton Athletic in Saturday’s late League One kick-off and James McClean has been discussing the fixture.

James McClean was in top form as Wrexham beat Blackpool 2-1 earlier this week to hand themselves a massive boost in their hunt for promotion.

McClean had a superb game, which included him scoring his first league goal of 2025.

On the same day, Wycombe Wanderers lost to Charlton Athletic, allowing the Red Dragons to once more overtake the Chairboys in the table.

Wrexham can win promotion on Saturday if Mike Dodds’ men lose to Leyton Orient in their fixture earlier in the day and they beat Charlton.

James McClean outlines Wrexham’s main focus for Charlton Athletic clash

But speaking this week, as per Leader Live, McClean has insisted ‘the main focus’ for Wrexham must be on beating Charlton and not what Wycombe do in their game on Saturday.

He said: “Obviously it helps knowing the situation before kick-off but regardless of the result, we still have to do our job.

“It doesn’t matter if they win, lose or draw, we have to win our game. That has to be the main focus, not how Wycombe get on.”

If they do beat Nathan Jones’ side and Wycombe slip up, it will be a historic day for Wrexham.

No side has ever won three promotions in a row when starting in the National League or higher.

Chester FC were the last team in England to do so, but their three promotions in a row only took them as high as the National League.

James McClean wants Racecourse Ground bouncing vs Charlton

Wrexham have a superb home record in the last 12 months, which includes a 10-month unbeaten streak.

They did eventually lose at home to Stevenage of January 28, 2025, but have been back to their best in Wales over recent weeks.

And McClean is hopeful that those in attendance at the Racecourse Ground are in top form when Charlton come to town.

He added: “Hopefully at 5.30pm on Saturday, The Racecourse is absolutely bouncing and the players can feed off that energy, we go and do the business and we hopefully win the game.”
