Wrexham are set to ply their trade in the Championship for the first time since it was rebranded, joining Birmingham City in being promoted from League One.

The League One play-off final takes place later this month, deciding who will join Wrexham and Birmingham City in escaping from the third tier.

Birmingham dominated League One, setting an EFL points record to clinch the title with ease.

Meanwhile, Wrexham were promoted to the Championship on April 26 after a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

They are now gearing up for their first season in the second tier of English football since the 1980s, and doubts over their squad have emerged.

Steve Parkin on Wrexham struggling in Championship

James McClean recently responded to claims about Wrexham struggling in the Championship.

Elsewhere, the club have been told to make six to nine signings after winning promotion.

Now, Steve Parkin has responded to suggestions that this Wrexham squad aren’t good enough for the second tier.

When doing so, he was quick to praise Tom Brady’s Birmingham City, dubbing them ‘remarkable’.

As per Leader Live, he said: “I heard some rubbish a couple of weeks that if Wrexham get in the Championship, we’d struggle.

“Hang on a minute, can we just enjoy this – a remarkable achievement – and see what happens.

“Plenty of people would have accepted mid-table mediocrity in League One so to finish in second spot behind a remarkable Birmingham team is absolutely phenomenal

“We are going to enjoy it because these are the times you should be with your family and friends, and really enjoy them. “

Are Wrexham ready for the Championship

Going into the 2025/26 season, it seems clear that the club will need to start spending a lot more.

Wrexham’s wages compared to top Championship teams in the 2024/25 season were pretty small.

Meanwhile, teams dropping down from the Premier League have spent a lot more than the Red Dragons.

It’s going to be the club’s toughest challenge since the takeover, and it’ll be interesting to see how 2025/26 plays out, with all eyes now on the summer window.
