Reports linking Paul Mullin with a move away from Wrexham to Wigan Athletic have emerged, while the striker has already made his stance on leaving the club clear.

The future of Paul Mullin at Wrexham has been called into question a fair bit over the last few months.

After featuring in a 3-2 defeat to Stevenage on January 28, the striker hasn’t made a single appearance for the club.

Phil Parkinson has said that Mullin will return for Wrexham’s 2025 pre-season, which begins in Australia on July 11.

However, reports emerging over the weekend now suggest he could leave, potentially for free.

What Paul Mullin has already said about leaving Wrexham

Alan Nixon reported on Saturday that Wigan Athletic want Mullin, saying Wrexham will let him leave, and due to his high wages, possibly for nothing, despite being under contract until 2027.

Wrexham fans were upset earlier this year when reports linking Mullin with an exit in the winter window emerged.

Meanwhile, the player has already spoken about leaving the Dragons when they were still in League Two.

Speaking to The Guardian in April 2024, Mullin said leaving Wrexham was not something that he thinks about and that he ‘adores’ the club.

He said: “Obviously, I want to play at the highest level possible. I’d love to play for Wales, the country where my nan was born. But in terms of leaving the club it’s never something I think about.

“I signed a new contract with Wrexham in January because I absolutely adore it. I come home every day and see (his son) Albi, which is the main reason I signed in the first place.”

Who will be Wrexham’s strikers in 2025/26

Steven Fletcher will leave Wrexham ‘not by choice’ when his contract expires next month.

Even with the Scotsman going, however, the Welsh side still have all of Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott, Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Modou Faal and Elliot Lee under contract who could be competing for a starting berth next season.

Lee is a natural midfielder, though he played up front for a good chunk of 2024/25. But even if he doesn’t start up top anymore, that would still be six strikers competing for two places.

Faal could be loaned out to make some room and garner some much-needed minutes. However, Wrexham are linked with several strikers before the summer window has even opened, suggesting at least one new number nine could be arriving this year.

In turn, whether it be Mullin or another player, it shouldn’t surprise fans if one of their current number nines moves on for the deadline on September 1.
