Wrexham new boy Kieffer Moore made his debut for the club in the Championship opener against Southampton on Saturday.

Kieffer Moore is officially a Wrexham player. Last week, Wrexham signed Moore on a permanent deal from Sheffield United and he became Phil Parkinson’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window so far.

The 49-cap Welsh international joins as part of a summer revolution at the Racecourse as the Dragons look to establish themselves in the Championship and eventually push for promotion to the Premier League.

On Saturday, Wrexham played their first second tier game in more than 40 years, taking on relegated Southampton at St Mary’s and losing in dramatic, gut-wrenching style in the last minute of the game.

Chris Wilder gives Wrexham new boy Kieffer Moore a glowing reference

Moore has two Championship promotions to his name, coming with Bournemouth and Ipswich Town. And last season, the 33-year-old almost had a third, reaching the Championship play-off final with Sheffield United before losing to Sunderland.

It came after a rather disappointing season for Moore who scored six goals in 30 league games for the Blades, and their failure in the Championship play-off final led to Chris Wilder’s exit from the club. But Wilder appeared on Sky Sports before the Wrexham and Southampton game, and he was asked for his views on Moore signing for Wrexham. He gave the striker a glowing reference.

He said: “Good signing for them… They’re a direct football team, they show their quality, they play in the areas they want to, they’ll play it up to Kieffer. For me it’s going to cause problems for the Championship because it’s not something the Championship will be used to on a regular basis. I don’t seem them struggling, I think they’ll be really competitive.

“He’s [Moore] a nice guy. Bournemouth he got promoted, Ipswich he got promoted, came very close with Sheffield United, that’s not a given. He’s doing a lot of things right.”

How did Kieffer Moore perform on his Wrexham debut?

As expected, Moore was a handful on his Wrexham debut. He started up top just in front of scorer Josh Windass and caused Southampton problems throughout the game, until he was forced off just before the hour mark with what looked like an ankle injury.

Parkinson will be praying that Moore hasn’t picked up a serious injury and that he’s back next week when Wrexham host West Brom in their opening home game of the season.

Despite Wrexham’s eventual 2-1 defeat against Southampton, there was a lot of positive signs from Moore and the rest of the new signings that featured too.

Parkinson will want to bounce back from that defeat with a positive performance against West Brom in a week’s time, but first, Wrexham play Hull City in the EFL Cup first round on Tuesday.
