Wrexham continue to push for promotion to the Championship but Huddersfield Town have decided to make a change.
The League One season has entered its final stretch and Wrexham are still in a great position.
Phil Parkinson saw Wrexham beat Rotherham United 1-0 on Saturday afternoon with Sam Smith scoring the only goal.
Wycombe Wanderers managed a point against Peterborough United, but those dropped points mean that Wrexham are now level with the Chairboys.
There is no joint-second when it comes to promotion though and Wrexham must overtake Wycombe in order to secure an automatic passage to the Championship.
Twists and turns are to be expected but one promotion-chasing side have now made a change in the dugout.
Huddersfield Town sack Michael Duff just days after Wrexham defeat
Wrexham can’t completely rule out Stockport County making a late charge for second place with Dave Challinor’s side six points behind.
There was a time when Huddersfield Town looked to be a real contender for automatic promotion under Michael Duff.
The Terriers went 16 games unbeaten between October 5 and January 24 but defeat to Bolton Wanderers has sparked a poor run of form.
Huddersfield were beaten 1-0 by Wrexham in midweek and followed that up with a 1-0 reverse at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
That is now just three wins in the last 12 games, losing seven times in that run – and Duff has paid the price.
Huddersfield have confirmed that Duff has now been sacked with chairman Kevin Nagle confirming his decision.
“This is not a decision that I have taken lightly. I really like Michael as a person and I know how diligently he has worked for the Club since he was appointed as Head Coach in the summer, so we’ve all been desperate for him to succeed,” said Nagle.
“However, our results on the pitch since the turn of the year have simply not been good enough. It is true that we’ve had an unprecedented injury situation to contend with, particularly recently, but I believe that the resources we have available are capable of more than the four wins we’ve registered in our last 15 games.
“I feel we must make this change now to reignite our challenge for promotion. I want to thank Michael, and I wish him all the best for the future,” he added.
Academy boss Jon Worthington will now coach Huddersfield for the rest of the season and attempt to spark Huddersfield back into life.
Now out of the top six, Huddersfield are 10 points behind Wrexham and may have too much work to do if they want to be back in the automatic hunt.
Michael Duff may point to Wrexham refereeing call
Duff will feel a little unfortunate given that Huddersfield are enduring an injury crisis right now.
The outgoing Huddersfield boss will also point to being more than a little unlucky against Wrexham in midweek.
Duff suggested that Steven Fletcher’s winner should have been disallowed as Wrexham claimed the 1-0 win.
Duff pointed to a foul in the build-up and then claimed that Fletcher was offside as he scored from close range.
The situation attracted EFL attention as Duff received an apology, indicating that Wrexham’s winner was given when it shouldn’t have been.
Wrexham took that win and grabbed another against Rotherham, whilst Huddersfield followed a 1-0 defeat with another.
That is just how football can go and Duff will feel that he is a touch unlucky to be out of work right now with that Wrexham defeat seemingly key in pushing Huddersfield towards this decision.
