Wrexham are preparing for a significant step-up in quality next season.

Following their historic promotion from League One, Wrexham are now set for a tougher challenge in the Championship facing the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City – recently relegated from the Premier League.

Teams have gone from League One to the Premier League in the past and that will certainly be the ambition of owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney next season.

Phil Parkinson has confirmed talks with players over potential signings as he looks to mould a competitive 25-man Wrexham squad, however, that will not include Mark Howard following his departure.

Ryan Reynolds sent a heartfelt message to Howard and the former Wrexham goalkeeper has given his prediction for the Red Dragons next season.

Mark Howard’s Wrexham Championship prediction

Speaking to talkSPORT 2’s ‘The Social’, Howard was asked how he thinks his old side will fare in the second tier next season and pointed to one vital aspect that will help the Red Dragons.

Howard stated: “The Championship is going to be a very tough task and I think everyone at the club is very understanding of that,

“But obviously with winning it breeds momentum and obviously Wrexham have got the know-how staff and I must credit the manager [Phil Parkinson] for the type of squad that he does put together,

“He gives everyone a chance and we all know everyone will fight for each other and you don’t have to play well every game because you just have to fight tooth and nail until that final minute.”

Wrexham can take inspiration from last season’s League One sides

Wrexham can learn from Derby, Portsmouth and Oxford as the three promoted teams from last season’s third tier all survived in the Championship.

Recruitment was a huge factor behind their success with a mix of youth and experience, however, all three clubs spent well within their financial means.

Wrexham’s £40m Championship windfall means they will have a bigger budget than the three mentioned clubs but have to spend the money wisely.

Valencia are competing with Wrexham to sign Lewis O’Brien whilst Parkinson has already confirmed the club are looking at the free agent market.
