Marvel director joins EFL club’s board after Wrexham visit

Callum Burton has been blown away by Wrexham’s sponsors with everybody seemingly wanting a slice of this remarkable rise.

Other clubs are waiting for their own McElhenney and Reynolds and we are seeing more big North American names arrive in the EFL.

Former NFL superstars J.J. Watt and Tom Brady have invested in Burnley and Birmingham City respectively, for instance.

Sheffield United have now seen Joe Russo join their board as a director, as confirmed on their official website.

Russo is very familiar to Ryan Reynolds having directed a number of film in the Marcel Cinematic Universe.

In fact, Russo was in attendance as Wrexham secured promotion from the National League back in 2023.

Russo was alongside Reynolds, McElhenney and Paul Rudd as they celebrated Wrexham’s success together.

Fast forward less than two years and Russo has now decided to get involved in football himself, joining one of the EFL’s big hitters.

Just as Wrexham are chasing promotion to the Championship, Sheffield United are aiming for the Premier League – and Russo will now play his part in their hopes.

Wrexham inspiring the ‘football bug’

Russo may well have been inspired by Reynolds and the Wrexham story having witnessed those joyous scenes at the STōK Cae Ras against Boreham Wood.

The ‘football bug’ appears to have bitten Russo with that trip to Wrexham no doubt playing a role in his Sheffield United deal.

Just last week, McElhenney and Reynolds themselves showed that their interest in the game is still expanding.

McElhenney and Reynolds invested in La Equidad, a Colombian team who will now be dreaming of success.

We all saw McElhenney and Reynolds invest in Club Necaxa over in Mexico, meaning they now have stakes in three football clubs.

Their investment in Wrexham has not only sparked more interest for themselves, but seemingly for other North Americans.
