Paul Mullin has fallen heavily out of favour in the last couple of months at Wrexham, with his future cast into doubt.

Paul Mullin had been a semi-regular feature for the Red Dragons in the first half of the campaign, even if he was largely coming off the bench in games.

However, that all changed in late January following the arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez.

Mullin played as Wrexham suffered their first home defeat of the season against Stevenage in late January, but has been out of action since then.

The striker was named on the bench against Mansfield Town but has not featured in any of their last eight League One ties.

Wrexham fans demanded Mullin return to the squad after the 2-0 defeat to Reading in midweek but his future in Wales does look increasingly in doubt.

What Paul Mullin could do at Wrexham in 2024/25

It has been speculated that Mullin may have kicked his last ball for the Hollywood-owned team in the 2024/25 season.

Meanwhile, one Sky Sports pundit suggested the Wrexham striker’s story is coming to an end after being frozen out.

His potential exit would no doubt leave fans upset after everything he has given to the club in the last four years.

But now, when speaking on the Rob. Ryan. Red podcast, The Athletic’s Wrexham correspondent Richard Sutcliffe has been discussing the number nine and had a more positive outlook.

He suggested Mullin shouldn’t be written off, and he could come back into the side and score some crucial goals before the season is over.

Sutcliffe said: “I wouldn’t write him off. You could only be one injury, you’re back in. And we know what he’s like with a script. You know, nobody writes better scripts than Paul Mullin, and he could come in, and he might get the two goals that get you over the line in April or something, so you never discount him.

“But I have to say. we’re on a road where you see the end is coming I think both of them, which would be sad.”

Paul Mullin poor form explained

When he was playing regularly, Mullin’s form in the first half of the current season was not great.

He has scored just three League One goals, which is in part why Wrexham ending up signing two new strikers in January.

But Sutcliffe went on to defend the forward’s form, suggesting he could improve if he gets a proper pre-season under his belt, which he hasn’t had for two years.

He added: “Mullin’s not had a pre-season for two years. So if he has a pre-season next year, he could be flying again next year, whether that’s League One or whether that’s in the Championship if Wrexham have gone up.

“It would be harsh to to judge him on the last two seasons even though he got 24 goals last year, he didn’t really get going until March.

“Maybe with a pre-season, he’ll be fit and firing like Marriott was.”
