The details of Paul Mullin’s loan move from Wrexham to Wigan Athletic have now been revealed, and the striker might even return to the Racecourse sooner than expected.

Paul Mullin will spend next season in League One. Wigan Athletic have completed a loan deal for Mullin who leaves Wrexham, for the time being anyway, as a club hero.

Many have spoken positively about the 30-year-old upon his temporary exit from the club. The latest being Humphrey Ker who labelled Mullin as a Wrexham ‘legend’ given what he’s done for the Dragons since signing from Cambridge United in 2021.

And Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe has praised Mullin‘s abilities, so too Phil Parkinson, and few would be surprised at all if Mullin ends up as Wigan’s top scorer next season, even the League One top scorer.

That would give Parkinson a lot of food for thought with Mullin under contract until the summer of 2027. But the striker could even return to the Racecourse in January.

Do Wigan Athletic have the option to buy Paul Mullin from Wrexham?

Since Mullin’s move to Wigan, many have been wondering whether the deal could be made into a permanent one at the end of the season. Journalist Nathan Salt has now clarified the matter, revealing on the Rob Ryan Red podcast that the Latics do not have an option to buy Mullin.

Salt also goes on to reveal further details about the loan deal. He says that Wrexham also have the option to recall Mullin in January; so if Mullin finds form early on at Wigan Athletic and Wrexham end up struggling, Parkinson could bring Mullin back into the fold at Wrexham in the January transfer window.

Lastly, Salt reveals that Wigan Athletic and Wrexham have gone 50/50 on Mullin’s wages. Salt said in full: “I’m led to believe: 50/50 on the wages, no option to buy there, recall option in January.”

What are Paul Mullin’s wages at Wrexham?

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have spent big to get the Dragons to where they are now. But it might not be as much as many would think.

Wrexham’s wage bill compared to Birmingham City’s last season makes for stark reading: Blues paid £9.23m across the season compared to Wrexham’s £5.99million.

But already this summer, reports have revealed that Wrexham will pay players much more money in a bid to attract more top talent to Wales, and to aid Wrexham’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

Per Salary Sport, Mullin is among the top three earners at Wrexham, bringing in £5,800-a-week, meaning Wigan and Wrexham will each pay £2,900-a-week to fulfil Mullin’s wages.
