Paul Mullin made an appearance in the draw between Wigan Athletic and Plymouth this weekend as he came off the bench.

This is despite it being reported that he was injured ahead of the game; however, Mullin eased concerns around his injury, as he was expected to be out for several weeks.

He was unable to score for the Latics to add to his tally of three goals in League One this campaign across 11 appearances.

It has been reported that he may leave Wrexham either in January or at the end of the season, and Mullin gave the clearest hint where his future lies.

This may be beneficial for the 30-year-old striker, to follow in the footsteps of a former Red Dragons teammate who moved permanently away from the Racecourse Ground and is thriving in the third tier of English football.

Jack Marriott scored his fourth goal in four League One games for Reading

Jack Marriott made the decision to leave Wrexham this summer after it was clear he was not part of the plans for the Championship campaign ahead.

While it could be argued that he got off to a slow start at Reading, as he failed to score on his debut, that is due to what he has achieved since at the Royals.

Marriott has now scored a goal in each of his last four League One games, demonstrating the fine form that he has found since leaving Wrexham.

After this goal for his new club, it means he has scored as many times for them as he did for Wrexham in League One.

Marriott would have been viewed as being a supportive player to Paul Mullin when he joined the club; however, he is now showing that he may be the better League One striker.

Jack Marriott and Paul Mullin’s League One records

Marriott has featured in more League One campaigns than Paul Mullin; however, the Wrexham icon could have featured in more, having won promotion with Cambridge from League Two, but he opted to join the Red Dragons ahead of that season.

Both strikers have struggled at times at this level to be a consistent goal threat, but they have demonstrated their ability to score at this level.

The pair have enjoyed a decent start to life in League One this campaign for Wigan and Reading, with there perhaps being a question around why they weren’t used more often by Phil Parkinson last season.

However, he would argue that the number of options he had up top and the quality he had to choose from allowed him to rotate in that position, with Steven Fletcher being their most prolific striker.
