Wrexham faced off with Rotherham United in a League One clash on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Dragons were back in League One action for the first time since the October international break on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson took his side to the New York Stadium for an away meeting against a Rotherham United team who have had a mixed start to the campaign.

Despite Rotherham languishing in midtable ahead of kick-off in Yorkshire, Wrexham will have been well aware of what a tough test the game would be, especially given their questionable record away from the Racecourse Ground.

The Welsh outfit had lost two and drawn two of their previous away league fixtures in 2024/25 but were able to come away with a much-needed three points on the day.

Rob McElhenney praised Wrexham fans after their impressive support at Rotherham, watching on as their side secured a 1-0 win.

Wrexham star Paul Mullin now second-best in EFL in one key area after Rotherham United

The only goal of the game came after 16 seconds via the club’s record goalscorer, Paul Mullin.

Wrexham fans sent a message to Mullin during the match after the striker found the net for the first time in the league this season.

The Englishman missed the start of the season due to injury and had only started one League One fixture prior to Saturday.

Despite his lack of playing time in the 2024/25 season, however, Mullin has now scored the joint-second-most goals of any player in the EFL in 2024.

Norwich City’s Josh Sargent has also netted 17 times in the current calendar year while Danilo Harley Orsi-Dadomo, who has played for Crawley Town and Burton Albion in 2024, is the only player to have scored more (18) than the Wrexham striker.

What Paul Mullin said about Jack Marriott injury

Wrexham will be pleased to see Mullin get back on the scoresheet, with the forward now needing to step up following the blow to Jack Marriott.

Marriott is currently the club’s top scorer in 2024/25 with five league goals but is now facing a four-month lay-off after an injury picked up in training.

The 30-year-old’s injury does mean Mullin will be guaranteed more starts in the coming months but he is still not happy to see his fellow striker sidelined.

Mullin spoke out on Marriott’s injury after Rotherham, labelling it as ‘heartbreaking’.

He said: “It’s heartbreaking at times; it was an innocuous thing in training which you couldn’t help, it was just one of those things, it’s part of football, Jack knows that but it is horrible for us because you see someone wait so long and start doing so well and be a real catalyst for us this season, it’s tough to take but that’s why the gaffer built a squad and there’s always competition for places.

“Unfortunately, Jack is going to be out for a long time, we are going to miss him and it’s going to be a really tough period for us but he’s done brilliant up to now, I’m sure he’ll be back even better.”
