Wrexham hero Paul Mullin scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night in a 1-0 win over Notts County in the League Cup.

Having featured twice in League One without scoring for loan club Wigan Athletic, Paul Mullin then scored his first goal in blue and white on Tuesday. The 30-year-old Wrexham man nailed home a penalty in a 1-0 win over Wrexham’s old foes Notts County in the first round.

Meanwhile, there was drama at the Racecourse as Wrexham eventually beat Hull City on penalties. Ollie Palmer stole the show with two late goals, making the game 3-3 ahead of the penalty shoot-out, with Jack Marriott scoring the winning penalty that sends Phil Parkinson’s side into the next round of the competition.

It was a dramatic night but there was also a lot of attention on social media for Mullin as he scored his first goal for Wigan.

Paul Mullin’s gesture to Notts County after Wrexham’s 2022/23 drama

The Wigan Athletic fans hailed Mullin’s performance against Notts County. They said that he looked like a new player having finally had some regular minutes in League One, and this goal is expected to do his confidence a world of wonder. It comes after Mullin was completely exiled by Parkinson in the second half last season, barely featuring before joining Wigan on loan this summer.

Currently, Wigan Athletic do not have the option to buy Mullin, whilst Wrexham have the option to recall him in the January transfer window. And Wrexham fans will be delighted to know what Mullin did towards the Notts County on Tuesday night. Memorably, Wrexham beat Notts County 3-2 towards the end of the 2022/23 season in the National League, which helped the Dragons eventually win the National League title ahead of Notts County who finished in 2nd.

When he came off the pitch in the second half, Notts County fans were heard booing Mullin. Mullin then turned around and applauded the Notts County fans before leaving the pitch.

Huge hint that Paul Mullin has played his last game for Wrexham

Upon sealing a loan move to Wigan, there was an unexplainable sense that Mullin was leaving for good. It was summed up by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s messages to Mullin at the time, which sounded a lot like permanent goodbyes to the Wrexham hero.

And more recently, Wrexham have given Mullin’s shirt number to Josh Windass. Ahead of the game against Southampton, Wrexham handed the no.10 jersey to Windass – it was previously Mullin’s number at Wrexham and it may be another indicator that Mullin’s time in North Wales is over.

Nonetheless, Mullin will be solely focussed on matters at Wigan Athletic. Now with his first goal under his belt, albeit a penalty, he’ll want to get off the mark in the league and back to his scoring best.

Wrexham play West Brom in the Championship this weekend while Mullin’s Wigan Athletic play Peterborough United in League One.
