Paul Mullin position change mooted as Phil Parkinson struggles to deal with problem Wrexham area

Paul Mullin has been off his game in the 2024/25 season for Wrexham but a change of position for the striker has now been discussed.

The 30-year-old is Wrexham’s all-time top scorer and his goals have been so key to them winning two promotions in a row.

2024/25 has seen Paul Mullin floundering on the goal front, however, with just two League One goals to his name so far.

Mullin’s Wrexham decline has become evident when taking a closer look at the data and it’s something Phil Parkinson needs to address in order to keep his side in the hunt for promotion.

Away from the likes of the former Cambridge United man and Ollie Palmer’s lack of goals though, there’s another problem area at Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson could play Paul Mullin in new Wrexham role

At present, Elliot Lee is the man Wrexham rely on to provide creativity through the centre of the pitch.

However, outside of Lee, the Welsh team don’t really have another number 10 on their books.

Ollie Rathbone and George Dobson have been deployed in this role at times but neither have excelled.

Now, when discussing the need for a number 10 on the Rob. Ryan. Red podcast, journalist Nathan Salt suggested Parkinson could drop Mullin into that role.

He said: “I still think a number 10 is needed if required. However, I was hypothesising to myself just now how about this and this probably sounds ridiculous. What if our number 10, is our number 10?

“What if Paul Mullin just drops into a midfield role more often and you have another two strikers.

“Say if you go out this month and you buy another top striker or once Jack Marriott’s back, what if it’s those two and then Mullin behind at times when Lee’s available.”

Elliot Lee injury update

While Mullin dropping back could be a potential solution to Wrexham’s number 10 problem, it does seem unlikely.

So, for the time being, there’s a lot of pressure on Lee to step up when he is back from injury.

The 30-year-old has missed three of Wrexham’s last four league games and Parkinson has shared an update on Lee this week.

He said: “It has been frustrating for Elliot in particular after he missed the whole of the Christmas period.

“Especially having scored such a great goal against Bristol Rovers.

“It was a quality finish but he went down after that, missed the Boxing Day game and came on against Wigan and did well, but he’s making good progress.”

Wrexham next line out on January 16th and a further update on Lee is likely to come in the buildup to that fixture.
