James McClean netted his first Wrexham goal of 2025 against Blackpool and it could prove to be a crucial one.

Wrexham drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers this past Friday, allowing Wycombe Wanderers to snatch the second automatic promotion place away from the Welsh outfit.

James McClean suggested Wrexham players may have become a bit complacent after they beat Burton Albion earlier this month and looked nailed-on for a top-two finish.

But there were no such problems against Blackpool, with every Wrexham player impressing in the 2-1 victory.

To add icing to the cake, Wycombe lost to Charlton Athletic on Monday as well, meaning it is once again the Red Dragons who are on track to join Birmingham City in the Championship next season.

Paul Mullin reacts to James McClean message following Blackpool vs Wrexham

McClean revealed what Rob McElhenney said to Wrexham players prior to the match, with the co-owner’s words seemingly having a positive impact.

It was the wing-back who opened the scoring on the day in the 61st minute before superstar Ollie Rathbone made it two just three minutes later.

Blackpool pulled a goal back late on, but three points were still taken back to the Racecourse Ground.

Following the tie, McClean, whose last goal came on December 14th, 2024, versus Cambridge United, took to Instagram to pen a message.

He wrote: “Great craic by the seaside up the Wrexham! Overdue goal that.”

Paul Mullin and Sam Smith then took to the comment section of the post, with Mullin posting a love-heart-eyes emoji and Smith writing: “Great assist,” followed by fire and crying laughing emojis.

Paul Mullin message to Wrexham

Mullin has not made a League One appearance for Wrexham since January 28 during a 3-2 defeat to Stevenage.

It remains to be seen if the striker will be involved again in the final two (hopefully) fixtures of 2024/25.

But he’s still showing his support for the club, with Mullin sending a message to Wrexham players following their win over Blackpool.

He wrote on Instagram: “Great result from the boys!”

Mullin, along with the rest of the squad, are back in training on Tuesday ahead of what is going to be a huge game against Charlton on Saturday.
