An insight into why Paul Mullin was not at his best for Wigan Athletic last time out has been shared.
Wrexham sent Paul Mullin out on loan to Wigan Athletic for the 2025/26 season.
The club icon lost his place under Phil Parkinson in January 2025 and did not make a single League One appearance from February to the end of the campaign.
While Wrexham are not back in action until Saturday when they host Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan played out a midweek fixture on Tuesday evening, and the on-loan forward came in for criticism.

Paul Mullin Wigan Athletic struggles explained
Wigan fans criticised Mullin for his display against Luton Town, in which he was given his first league start of the campaign.
Some of the comments aimed at the Wrexham loanee included:
- Send Mullin back at half time. Waste of space
- Send Mullin back to Wrexham
- I’ve watched “Welcome To Wrexham” and I was under the impression that Mullin was actually good?
- Crying out for Saydee or Asamoah, Mullin’s not got the pace or strength needed to keep that ball moving when he’s through
Manager Ryan Lowe spoke out about criticism from supporters on the night.
Elsewhere, following the match, Wrexham fans showed their support for Mullin, who they regard as a ‘legend’.
Now, a panel of Latics experts have shared their thoughts on Wigan’s two most recent results.
One of whom, George Arkwright, explained to Wigan Today how Mullin was isolated up top for much of his time on the pitch and that Lowe should have dealt with Luton’s close man-marking tactic better.
He stated: “Paul Mullin struck a frustrated and slightly unfit figure that was mostly adrift at the top of the pitch. Our players could not find a sweet ball in for him, and we did not deal well with a close man-mark from the Hatters; that’s really on Lowe.”

Upon his return to the third tier of English football, Mullin has missed a couple of big chances, including one in the aforementioned Luton match.
But apart from on Tuesday, he has only been used in a substitute role for the Latics in the league so far.
