Wrexham have a number of injury concerns going into their meeting with Southampton on Saturday.

After over forty years away, the Red Dragons are back in the second tier for the first time this weekend.

Wrexham will travel to Southampton for a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday, competing in what will be their debut match in the rebranded Championship.

It’s expected to be a very tough game for the Welsh side, coming up against a team that spent 2024/25 in the Premier League.

One Sky Sports pundit has suggested that Wrexham will lose to Southampton fairly comfortably.

Now, Phil Parkinson has shared an injury update ahead of the match.

New Wrexham signing George Thomason set for scan

Wrexham have had a busy summer transfer window, which included the signing of George Thomason.

The midfielder arrived from Bolton Wanderers in a seven-figure deal, but there are doubts over his ability to feature in the Dragons’ season opener.

Parkinson has confirmed that Thomason has a thigh problem, and he will be sent for a scan on Thursday.

It’s not thought to be a serious injury, but Wrexham will know more after the scan.

He said, as per Leader Live: “George has got a slight thigh problem, I don’t think it is too serious but we are going to have it scanned on Thursday,” said Parkinson.

“He is making good progress with it, we just pulled him out as a precaution and it hasn’t quite settled down as quickly as we wanted.

“We have had that bit of disruption in pre-season with injuries which isn’t ideal but equally, we have got a squad of good players.”

Phil Parkinson gives Ollie Rathbone injury update

As well as Thomason, four more players are doubts for the meeting with the Saints.

Andy Cannon is a long-term absentee, and though he’s returned to training, he is lacking match sharpness.

Meanwhile, Parkinson also gave updates on Ollie Rathbone, Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez.

He said: “Sam played some minutes on Saturday but he is behind the other lads.

“We need to get him going again but he is getting there.

“Jay is still a concern for us and I am really frustrated for Ollie because he was Player of the Season last year so that was a real blow for us.

“We need to get those lads back as quick as we can.”
