As Sam Dalby continues to thrive in Scotland, Phil Parkinson has addressed rumours Wrexham may look to recall the striker from Dundee United.

The Wrexham striker joined the SPL outfit on loan for the season in the summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at the Racecourse Ground.

Since heading up North of the border, Sam Dalby has been in prolific form, bagging 10 goals in 18 games for Dundee United, including a late winner in the Dundee derby.

Dalby’s performances have earned him praise, and led to speculation that Phil Parkinson may look to bring the forward back to Wales to help his parent club out for the rest of the season.

Phil Parkinson suggests Sam Dalby recall is not on the cards

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson was asked about Dalby’s situation, and judging by the Wrexham manager’s response, it would seem the 25-year-old is staying where he is until the end of the campaign.

“Sam is there for the season, there is the opportunity to call him back and we’re just going to weigh everything up,” said Parkinson. “Be fair to Dundee United because they have been great for him and be fair to Sam as well. He’s a player we rate but we just felt it was time for him to go and be someone’s number nine.”

“He needed that and what a great loan move it’s been for him so far. He’s done really well, but we felt he would, given a run of games,” Parkinson added. “He’s got real quality and it was great for us to watch the game the other night and to see him keep getting goals.”

On what he plans to do this month in the transfer market, Parkinson added: “We want to get Tuesday’s game out of the way and then just sit down, myself and the owners, and say ‘let’s look at our squad, where are we going to go for the second part of the season in terms of the squad numbers?’

“There are other players who may need to go out on loan who haven’t had much game-time and we’re just going to make decisions.”

Recalling Sam Dalby is not the answer to Wrexham’s goalscoring problems

Simply put, Sam Dalby is on fire right now, and it would be so tempting for Wrexham to want to bring him back into the fold and see if he can replicate that form for the Red Dragons.

However, the decision was made in the summer that he wasn’t right for the club and the direction they wanted to go in, and it’s not like he has suddenly become a different player; Parkinson has always known what Dalby is capable of, and still didn’t want him in the Wrexham squad.

Dalby will have lots of interest in his services now, and there’s no doubt that he has reignited his career with his displays in Scotland, but he is still not the right fit for Wrexham’s needs.

Wrexham would be far better dipping into the transfer market and thinking longer-term, finding a new striker who can not only fire them to promotion, but do a job for them in the Championship, too.
