Wrexham would have been disappointed to only come away with a 1-1 draw following a spirited display against league leaders Birmingham City.
Fans were impressed with Wrexham’s performance against the League One high-flyers given how poorly they played against Shrewsbury last time out.
George Dobson heaped praise on Ollie Rathbone after Rathbone opened the scoring with a wonderful effort into the bottom left hand corner that gave Birmingham goalkeeper Allsop no chance.
Wrexham would have been disappointed not to come away with three points given their domination in the second half but Phil Parkinson was pleased with his side’s efforts – perhaps it was down to a rousing team talk before the game.
Phil Parkinson reminded Wrexham players how far the club has come before showdown with Birmingham
Speaking on Sky Sports post-match coverage of Wrexham v Birmingham, manager Parkinson revealed his team talk to his players before the game in order to remind them of how far the club has come in recent years.
Parkinson stated: “I said to the lads before the game that two years ago we were playing Gateshead away in front of 1,000 people and now we’re entertaining Birmingham in front of a full house and live on TV.”
That journey has been an incredible one for all to see and Parkinson was keen for his side to show the world exactly what they were capable of doing.
The Wrexham boss stated: “We’ve earnt the right to be here but now we’re here in these big games we’ve got to show everybody what we’re all about. I think we did that all bar getting the winning goal.”
Wrexham’s incredible rise from the National League
Should Wrexham kick on and gain promotion this season, it would be their third consecutive promotion – something that has yet to be achieved in English Football League history.
The Red Dragons won the National League title in 2023 after an intense battle with Notts County, who did get promoted via the play-offs eventually.
Wrexham were once again promoted last season from League Two, after the club finished in second place behind historic rivals Stockport County.
It remains to be seen whether the club can make history again this season but what can be guaranteed is that Parkinson will keep his players grounded and fighting for every possible point.
