Phil Parkinson sends ‘honest’ message to Wrexham players who blew another lead vs Bristol Rovers

Wrexham are starting to make a habit of conceding goals late on to drop points.

Before Saturday’s clash, the Red Dragons last lined out against Cambridge United – a side who are fighting to stay in League One this season.

Wrexham had a 2-1 lead in that match and looked set to secure a hard-fought three points at the Racecourse Ground.

However, Lewis Brunt gave away a penalty, which was then scored in the 89th minute to make it 2-2.

It was a very similar story when Wrexham faced Bristol Rovers in an early kick-off on Saturday.

Elliot Lee scored after 17 minutes, with Red Dragons fans lauding Matty James for the assist he produced.

But despite dominating a lot of the match, Wrexham ended up being held to a 1-1 draw thanks to some poor defending from Ryan Barnett.

Phil Parkinson message to Wrexham players after Bristol Rovers

The draw has left Wrexham with a serious mountain to climb in their quest for automatic promotion.

They have moved level on points with second-place Birmingham City but the Tom Brady-owned club have three games in hand and are likely to win on Monday.

Now, following his team dropping points late on for a second game on the spin, Phil Parkinson has stated that Wrexham should have already had two or three goals before Promise Omochere scored the equaliser in the 86th minute, as per BBC Sport.

He said: “I’m choked, absolutely choked – it’s a game we’ve dominated really, never felt under any pressure in difficult conditions.

“Moments have cost us but really, if we’re honest on the balance of the game, the game should have been done and dusted by then.

“We should have been two or three up and that [equalising] goal should have been a consolation.”

What Phil Parkinson must do to solve Wrexham problem

While Barnett’s defending for the Bristol Rovers goal was poor, Wrexham have largely been excellent defensively this term.

They still have the best defensive record in League One, with the problem clearly at the other end of the pitch.

The club’s backline are going to concede on occasions and their forwards need to start stepping up a lot more.

Ollie Palmer now has just three goals in 21 league games, while Paul Mullin has one, Modou Faal has zero and Steven Fletcher has two.

Generally, sides who secure promotion normally have at least one number nine who gets close to 20 goals in a season but right now, none of their forwards have any real chance of going so – something Parkinson needs to address sooner rather than later.

Luckily, Wrexham want to sign a striker next month with two players from Leeds United linked.
