Phil Parkinson seriously impressed with recent Wrexham signing, he has ‘looked really good’

Wrexham are encountering attacking problems at the moment with Saturday’s blank at Stockport County a concern for Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham were hoping to secure a big win at Edgeley Park on Saturday afternoon but Phil Parkinson endured a difficult afternoon.

Stockport County claimed a 1-0 win over Wrexham as Louie Barry bagged a first-half winner, firing a superb strike beyond Callum Burton.

Parkinson praised Burton’s display as he deputised in goal following Arthur Okonkwo’s recent injury, but that was a one of few positives.

Wrexham managed just one shot on target against Stockport and served up another fairly toothless performance in the final third.

Phil Parkinson praises Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Wrexham just aren’t clicking in the final third right now.

Parkinson has seen his side score just four goals in the last five League One games whilst also drawing a blank at Harrogate Town in the FA Cup.

Parkinson has rued the absence of Steven Fletcher whilst Paul Mullin has yet to really get his League One campaign up and running.

Wrexham have decided to move into the free agent market in recent weeks, signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson on a free transfer.

Bodvarsson left Bolton Wanderers at the end of last season and started the season as a free agent before Wrexham pounced.

The Icelandic striker made his first league start on Saturday but couldn’t find the net as Wrexham fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Parkinson has moved to praise Bodvarsson though, telling The Leader that he feels Bodvarsson has ‘looked really good’ for Wrexham.

Parkinson does though accept that Bodvarsson still needs to build up his fitness levels in order to show full sharpness in League One.

“We have brought in Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who has looked really good; he is getting up to speed and just needs game-time, and Paul Mullin is one moment away from getting himself up and running again which I am sure he will,” said Parkinson.

“We have just got to keep going. I have got a lot of belief in the lads we have got out on the pitch. We have got to keep chipping away. We have got players in the team who can score,” he added.

Bodvarsson may not bring goals for Wrexham

Bodvarsson has been handed a contract until January, so the 32-year-old is effectively playing for an extended stay at the STōK Cae Ras.

Parkinson appears to have been impressed so far but whether he can solve the goalscoring concerns is another matter.

Bodvarsson has never – across spells in Iceland, Norway, Germany and England – scored double figures in a league season.

The striker played 78 times in League One for Bolton but scored just 14 times, including only four goals last season.

Bodvarsson described himself as a fine target man who can offer a lot to the team even if he isn’t scoring goals.

Parkinson will value those qualities but Wrexham need goals – and Bodvarsson will need to discover a finishing touch at Wrexham.
