Wrexham beat Mansfield Town 2-1 on Saturday afternoon but Phil Parkinson has confirmed a potentially ‘serious’ blow after the win.

Sunday was a big day for Wrexham as Phil Parkinson took his side to face Mansfield Town away from home.

Wrexham watched Wycombe Wanderers drop points on Saturday afternoon, so Sunday’s trip to Field Mill was a golden opportunity to cut the gap.

It was a narrow victory in the end but Wrexham beat Mansfield 2-1 to put the pressure back on Wycombe once again.

Max Cleworth’s penchant for scoring goals was on show once again as he powered home a brilliant strike to seal all three points.

Wrexham’s promotion hopes continue but one player could not only miss Wednesday’s clash with Peterborough United, but also a much longer period.

Wrexham confirm major Andy Cannon blow

Wrexham midfielder Andy Cannon picked up a nasty-looking injury in the first half of Sunday’s clash.

Cannon went down immediately and looked in serious pain as he received oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off.

Parkinson now offered an update whilst speaking on Wrexham’s official website earlier on Tuesday, admitting that Cannon appeared to have suffered a ‘serious injury’.

Parkinson noted that Cannon was due to see a specialist on Tuesday night but his knee problem did not look good, hinting at a significant lay-off.

“Unfortunately, Andy’s knee injury doesn’t look good and he is set to see a specialist tonight. The current prognosis is that it is a serious injury,” said Parkinson.

Wrexham have now confirmed that Cannon has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery next week.

The confirmation added that Cannon faces a ‘significant’ spell on the sidelines with ACL tear recovery usually taking around nine months to a year.

Issues in Wrexham midfield

Cannon’s injury is a major blow not just for the midfielder himself, but also for Parkinson and his midfield ranks.

Elliot Lee is on his way back but Cannon’s injury serves as a blow in terms of goal threat from the Wrexham engine room.

Matty James, George Dobson and George Evans are all quality players but they aren’t especially prolific.

Ollie Rathbone has impressed for Wrexham and looks almost undroppable now, but midfielder James Jones left Wrexham for Burton Albion in January.

Cannon’s injury impacts Wrexham’s numbers in midfield once again and Parkinson may need to consider James McClean in midfield – especially with so many other options at left wing back.

For now though, our best wishes go out to Cannon and we hope to see him back thriving in a Wrexham shirt once again some time soon.
