Player who left Wrexham in free transfer to Swansea issues most positive Championship prediction yet

Wrexham are days away from their first game in the Championship, and one former player has issued a positive prediction.

The Red Dragons kick off their 2025/26 campaign with a 12:30pm BST clash against Southampton.

The Saints were a Premier League side last term, and it’s been predicted that Wrexham will lose against Will Still’s men.

Phil Parkinson’s team have a difficult start to the season, which includes meetings with the likes of West Brom and Norwich City.

And while Rob Mac played down the idea of ‘consolidation’ this season, many are already writing them off when it comes to promotion.

Wrexham Championship prediction

Opta’s supercomputer has put Wrexham 21st in their predicted Championship table.

Paul Mullin is hopeful of a top-half finish for his long-time club.

Pundit Ali Maxwell has said that Wrexham will be 18th in the second tier next term.

Now, however, a former player has suggested that the play-offs could be on the cards.

Neil Taylor left the Red Dragons on a free transfer for rivals Swansea City back in 2010.

And speaking to BBC Sport about his former teams this week, he has suggested that despite Wrexham now punching above their weight, they can make the top six, especially if Ryan Reynolds and Mac back the club in January.

He said: “It will be a step up [for Wrexham]. At Swansea it took us a year or two to get to grips with it, but you know you’re rarely out of it in that division.

“At Villa, we’d not been good enough for seven months and then won ten in a row to get to the play-offs.

“They are punching above their weight, but they can still aim for the play-offs. And if they can stay there or thereabouts, they can always back themselves in January.”

What Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac expect from Wrexham

While Rob has hinted at going for another promotion this term, that doesn’t appear to be the goal, at least for now.

Instead, it has been reported that Reynolds and Mac want Premier League football by the end of 2026/27.

However, as we saw during the winter of 2025, if there is a chance it can happen this season, the Wrexham owners are more than willing to back their club to achieve that goal sooner than expected.
