Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be eyeing up a historic win against Cardiff City in the EFL Cup.

Wrexham will face Cardiff City in the EFL Cup fourth round, where the Red Dragons will be keen to come out victorious in a Welsh derby.

Aside from the prospect of reaching the fifth round of the EFL Cup, bragging rights will be at stake as the Bluebirds travel to the Racecourse Ground for their first meeting between the two sides in 23 years.

The Red Dragons have shown their quality in the EFL Cup so far, having toppled Championship clubs Hull City and Preston North End before seeing off League One outfit Reading at the Racecourse Ground.

In what is set to be a historic meeting between the two clubs, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be keen to turn over the fellow Welsh side.

Wrexham have not beaten Cardiff City in 25 years

Wrexham and Cardiff City have not come face to face with each other since the 2002/03 season, which saw the Bluebirds do the double over the Red Dragons.

The last time that Wrexham were victorious over the side from the Welsh capital was in January 2000, with Karl Connolly and Darren Ferguson getting the goals in a 2-1 win.

The previous win against Cardiff City was played in front of a depleted crowd of just 4,350 spectators, but with the boost that Wrexham have had since the takeover of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, yet another sell-out crowd will be expected at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham’s overall record against Cardiff City has seen the Red Dragons notch just nine wins in comparison to their 19.

On this occasion, with Wrexham in the Championship, there is every expectation that they can win against League One side Cardiff City.

Phil Parkinson’s managerial record against Cardiff City

While it has been over two decades since Wrexham and Cardiff City came face to face, Red Dragons boss Phil Parkinson is far more familiar with the side.

The Wrexham coach has encountered Cardiff City on five occasions in his managerial career, most recently with Bolton Wanderers in the 2017/18 Championship season, which saw Parkinson win 2-0 at home before a defeat on the road against the Bluebirds.

Having faced Cardiff City as early as 2003 during his time with Colchester United, Parkinson has two wins in total against the Bluebirds, as well as two defeats and a draw.

Hopefully, Parkinson can lead Wrexham to a historic victory to take them to the fifth round of the EFL Cup.
