Wrexham wanted to sign a number of Cardiff City players during the 2025 summer transfer window.

Wrexham will face Cardiff City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this year.

It will likely be the only meeting between the two sides in 2025/26 after the Dragons were promoted to the Championship and Cardiff suffered relegation to League One.

As is often the case when teams are relegated, Wrexham’s upcoming opponents had to try and fend off interest in a lot of their better players over the summer.

Phil Parkinson added plenty of Championship experience to his squad during the latest transfer window, and his club were linked with plenty of Cardiff stars.

Cardiff City boss on Wrexham’s interest in Calum Chambers

Among the players eyed was former Arsenal gem Calum Chambers.

Wrexham were linked with Chambers in mid-August as they looked to add more experience to their backline following a shaky start to the season.

The Englishman did not end up moving to the Racecourse Ground, however, with Brian Barry-Murphy sending a clear message at the time.

Cardiff’s boss responded to Wrexham’s interest in Chambers bluntly, making it clear the player was not available for transfer.

He first said that ‘I’ve heard nothing’ about a potential deal for the centre-back. Then, when asked if the defender would remain with the Bluebirds for the remainder of the season, he simply replied: “Absolutely.”

Every Cardiff City player Wrexham were linked with in summer

It was not just Chambers that Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s club were eyeing during the summer, however.

Wrexham were linked with Callum Robinson after the striker enjoyed a prolific 2024/25 season in a struggling team.

Elsewhere, Cardiff duo Ollie Tanner and Isaak Davies were linked with the Red Dragons very early in the summer.

And while he was not at either club before the transfer window opened, Cardiff signed Jack Kingdon in late August after Wrexham had previously shown an interest in the former Manchester United man.
