Derby County loan star to miss Wrexham homecoming, two former targets set to play

Wrexham’s attention now turns back to Championship action as Phil Parkinson prepares to take on Derby County this weekend.

This has been a positive few days for Wrexham and boss Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham beat Reading in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, just days after a 3-2 Championship win over Norwich City.

Two wins in a matter of days is a positive step for Wrexham, and Parkinson will look to make it three in a row as Derby County visit the STōK Cae Ras.

How two recent Wrexham targets are faring at Derby County

Derby have struggled so far this season and lost 1-0 at home to Preston North End last weekend.

John Eustace is still bedding in a number of new players, just as Phil Parkinson is at Wrexham.

A host of those players were actually targeted by Wrexham, but ended up joining the Rams instead.

Wrexham eyed Lewis Travis early in the summer window as Parkinson chased a new midfield signing.

Travis had entered the final year of his Blackburn Rovers contract, and interest mounted over the summer.

A proven leader and Championship midfielder, Travis would have brought real battling qualities to the Wrexham engine room.

Travis instead ended up joining Derby, reuniting with his former Blackburn Rovers boss Eustace.

Travis has skippered Derby in their last two games, immediately taking on a key role under Eustace.

The midfielder is still settling in at Derby, but will pose a real test for the likes of Ben Sheaf and George Dobson in Wrexham’s midfield.

Wrexham also looked at Bobby Clark, after the former Liverpool talent failed to make an impact at Red Bull Salzburg.

Clark had shown potential at Liverpool, and Wrexham seemingly considered him as a potential attacking midfield addition.

Derby won the race for Clark’s signature, taking him on loan for the season in an attempt to help him find his best form again.

Clark has played five times in the Championship for Derby, but he is still waiting for his first goal or assist this season.

Clark did score in a Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley in August, and will be looking to find his first league goal on Saturday.

Parkinson will know all about the quality both Travis and Clark provide, and will be looking for his Wrexham players to shut them down this weekend.

Owen Beck looks set to miss Wrexham clash

Remarkably, Derby actually signed three Wrexham targets over the summer.

Owen Beck joined Derby on loan from Liverpool, becoming yet another player to reunite with Eustace, having worked together at Blackburn Rovers.

Wrexham were interested in signing Beck over the summer, as Parkinson targeted a new left wing-back.

Liberato Cacace joined Wrexham, and the interest in Beck appeared to fade from there, with Derby swooping in to sign him.

Beck hails from Wrexham, and he would have surely loved to be involved at the STōK Cae Ras this weekend.

However, Beck has missed the opening stages of the season through injury and is not expected to return by Saturday.

Beck may well make the journey and watch his team-mates in action and make an emotional homecoming in the process, after a summer switch failed to materialise.
