Released Wrexham ace admits Rob McElhenney didn’t want him to leave, ‘he begged me to stay’

Wrexham have brought in two new strikers this summer, and there could be more attacking additions on the way for Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham are closing in on Kieffer Moore, with the Sheffield United striker already spotted around the STōK Cae Ras on Monday.

Moore will become Phil Parkinson’s new target man, and the third attacking signing of the summer, following deals for Ryan Hardie and Josh Windass.

Wrexham are also targeting Nathan Broadhead, who would provide Parkinson with a versatile attacking threat.

This has been a summer of attacking change for Wrexham, with Paul Mullin loaned to Wigan Athletic and Steven Fletcher released.

Both Mullin and Fletcher were firm fan favourites, so the likes of Moore, Hardie, Windass and potentially Broadhead will hope to follow in their footsteps.

Steven Fletcher on Rob McElhenney begging him to stay

Mullin made his competitive Wigan debut over the weekend, but Fletcher’s situation is a little different.

Now 38, Fletcher has admitted that he may retire after being let go by Wrexham over the summer.

The Scot considered retirement in 2023, but it was only the special aspect of the Wrexham project which made him reconsider.

Fletcher’s Wrexham career is now over, and he is wary of trying to chase that high with another move this summer.

Speaking on The Warm-Up, Fletcher admitted that co-chairman Rob McElhenney actually begged him to stay at Wrexham.

Fletcher’s contract was coming to an end, and McElhenney urged him to play on and continue his Wrexham career.

The decision was taken out of Fletcher’s hands, though, as boss Parkinson decided to let him go just two days later.

“Rob, he loved his golf as much as I did,” said Fletcher.

“He invited me in the summer, we obviously went to Vegas for the off-season thing, getting promoted. After Vegas, all the boys flew home, but me and Elliot Lee flew to L.A. to meet the owner, to play a few rounds of golf with him, so it was quite good, it’s just little things like that.

“In the buggy, he begged me to stay. Two days later, I got released! I was like ‘he’s sucked me right in there!’” he added.

Steven Fletcher another painful exit for Rob McElhenney

If anybody still thinks that McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have invested in Wrexham for publicity or as a bit of fun, then McElhenney’s reactions to departures should prove otherwise.

Wrexham’s rise means players are often replaced even after winning promotions, something McElhenney finds ‘tragic’.

Seeing great players and even better characters leave Wrexham is painful for everybody involved, including McElhenney.

Luke Young’s departure in 2024 hit McElhenney hard, as the midfielder was his favourite player at the STōK Cae Ras.

McElhenney clearly loved Fletcher as well, but it’s Parkinson who makes the football decisions – and he felt that time was up for Fletcher at Wrexham.

That was a tough decision to swallow, but it may be fitting for Fletcher to end his career on the high of two promotions in two seasons as a Wrexham star.
