Steven Fletcher has become the second player to announce his Wrexham exit on May 15.

The 2024/25 season drew to a close with Wrexham second in League One, securing the Red Dragons’ automatic promotion to the Championship.

It was a major milestone in the club’s history, but just like every season when Wrexham step up a division, it was expected to, and now, has seen previously key players leave.

Mark Howard confirmed his departure earlier on May 15, citing his desire to keep playing regular football.

After Howard, Steven Fletcher has now confirmed he too is going to be departing the Red Dragons.

Steven Fletcher confirms he’s leaving Wrexham, sends message to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

The striker was a key figure in the 2024/25 season despite primarily being used off the bench.

He scored eight League One goals, making him the club’s second top goalscorer behind Elliot Lee (9 in all competitions).

However, Fletcher has now taken to Instagram on Thursday evening to confirm his time at Wrexham is coming to an end.

He stated the decision was ‘not by choice’ and he also sent a message to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Fletcher wrote: “It’s with a heavy heart, and not by choice, that I unfortunately have to announce my departure from what I can only describe as the most magical club I have ever played at!

“In my 22 years of stepping onto a pitch, I have never experienced anything like this club.
I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to come here and fall back in love with the game! To have had the experiences and the opportunities that this club has given me has been just incredible. And this group of lads are the best that I have ever shared a changing room with.”

“It’s not just a team or a changing room. This group of boys, fans and staff have been my family for the past two years.

“You welcomed me with open arms and open hearts and made me feel like I had a purpose again.

“To my teammates – you are family! I have never experienced a dressing room like it in my career, and I can’t believe I don’t get to walk in there every day next season.”

“To the staff – thank you for your time, your dedication, and your faith in me.”

“And to the fans – thank you for taking a risk on an old Scottish man and making him feel like this was his home ❤️ the memories will last forever!

“Wrexham as a club and a town and as people, will have a place in my heart that will never be replaced !!

“And to @robmcelhenney@vancityreynolds – Thank you! For the opportunity, the support, the joy that being a part of this club has brought me!”

Four Wrexham players could still leave

Fletcher and Howard’s exits are not the only ones that could take place in the next month or so.

Eoghan O’Connell’s contract runs out on June 30, and a decision on his future has yet to be announced.

Elsewhere, Josh Adam, Brad Foster, and Liam Hall’s deals expire next month, but the club have the option to extend them all by 12 months.
