Wrexham have started the season in shaky fashion, but former captain Luke Young is going through a real struggle at Cheltenham Town.

Wrexham’s start to life in the Championship has been a little patchy, winning just one of the first five league games this season.

Phil Parkinson is under early pressure and could end up leaving the club, just like Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer in recent months.

Difficult departures have been a real theme for Wrexham alongside the promotions, and that included former captain Luke Young.

Former Wrexham favourite Luke Young enduring Cheltenham Town struggles

Wrexham snapped up Young from Torquay United in 2018, long before Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds completed their 2021 takeover.

The midfielder went on to become a fan favourite at Wrexham, racking up more than 250 appearances for the club.

Rob Mac named Young as his favourite player at Wrexham and found his 2024 exit ‘devastating’.

Young joined Cheltenham Town after being let go by Wrexham as Phil Parkinson prepared for life in League One.

Now in his second season at Cheltenham, Young is unfortunately suffering at the bottom of the League Two table.

Cheltenham sit rock-bottom in League Two, picking up just four points from the first eight games of the season.

The Robins have won just one of the first eight, losing six times while scoring three goals and conceding 14.

Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn is under immense pressure, and Young will hope to help turn the club’s fortunes around.

Young has started every League Two game so far this season and even captained the side in a 1-0 defeat at Barnet.

Wrexham fans have seen enough heart, character and desire from Young over the years to believe that he can be a figurehead to lead Cheltenham away from trouble, but this has been a nightmare start to the season.

Jake Bickerstaff waiting for lift-off at Cheltenham Town

Young has been joined at Cheltenham by a former Wrexham teammate.

Striker Jake Bickerstaff joined Cheltenham on loan for the 2025-26 season, having spent last year at Altrincham.

The 24-year-old impressed as a trialist for Cheltenham and reunited with Young after falling down Wrexham’s pecking order.

The impressive pre-season displays are yet to translate to League Two action, with Bickerstaff only making one start so far this season.

Bickerstaff has yet to score for Cheltenham in competitive action and has only started once in League Two.

Cheltenham are looking for heroes to turn their dreadful start to the season around, and the experience of success at Wrexham should make Young and Bickerstaff go-to players over the course of the season.
