Wrexham are back in second place in the League One table after a crucial 2-1 victory over Blackpool on Monday.

Wrexham drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers on Friday afternoon, leaving fans frustrated as Wycombe Wanderers took control of second place.

Monday’s trip to Blackpool become crucial for Wrexham, but Phil Parkinson’s side stepped up to the task brilliantly.

A few chances went begging in the first half, but James McClean stepped up to open the scoring as he cut in from the right flank to find the bottom corner.

Ollie Rathbone added number two, and whilst Rob Apter pulled one back, Wrexham secured a 2-1 victory over the Tangerines.

Rob McElhenney sends rallying cry to Wrexham fans

Wrexham fans certainly enjoyed their day by the seaside, especially as Wycombe Wanderers lost 4-0 to Charlton Athletic.

That leaves Wrexham two points clear in second place with just two games left to play.

Promotion is in Wrexham’s hands right now and the attention now turns to Saturday evening.

Wrexham host Charlton this weekend, with the Addicks not mathematically out of automatic promotion contention just yet.

The Addicks need more than a few favourable results, but their 4-0 thrashing of Wycombe shows the quality they possess.

Rob McElhenney watched from the stands as he joined the travelling Wrexham supporters in the away end.

McElhenney celebrated Wrexham’s win after the final whistle, but also sent a rallying cry to fans ahead of the Charlton clash.

Posting on his Instagram story, McElhenney praised the ‘incredible energy’ from the travelling fans on Monday.

McElhenney wants to see that atmosphere recreated against Charlton this weekend, issuing a rallying cry to supporters.

McElhenney added that the Wrexham fans ‘mean everything’ to him, having celebrated Monday’s brilliant win together.

‘Incredible energy from our Wrexham family today in the away section,’ said McElhenney.

‘Bring it back home Saturday, we need you all!

‘Nonstop cheering. This team, this town. You all mean everything,’ he added.

Three former Charlton Athletic players could feature for Wrexham

Forget all the hype around Wrexham against Birmingham City over the course of the season, this weekend’s game with Charlton is the biggest of the campaign.

A win would push Wrexham towards promotion and possibly even secure a place in the Championship depending on Wycombe’s result at Leyton Orient.

Wrexham will have three former Charlton players to call upon this weekend, and all will be looking to force Wrexham over the line.

Defender Eoghan O’Connell spent just a matter of months with Charlton, joining from Rochdale in the summer of 2022.

Wrexham pounced to sign him in January 2023, with O’Connell making just 22 appearances in all competitions.

Elliot Lee joined Charlton in 2021 as he arrived on loan from Luton Town for the 2021-22 campaign.

The son of former Charlton midfielder Rob Lee, the now-Wrexham star hit four goals in 39 games for the Addicks before joining Wrexham.

George Dobson quit Charlton last summer, leaving the club in order to sign for Wrexham on a free transfer.

Dobson is likely to start this weekend, but O’Connell and Lee may have to settle for bench roles – just as they did at Blackpool.

If called upon, all three will be desperate to beat their former club and send Wrexham closer to the Championship.
