Wrexham-born Robbie Savage is now eyeing promotion out of the National League with a former Red Dragon.

Robbie Savage left North Wales as a youngster to join Manchester United before going on to have a fruitful Premier League career.

Savage has stepped into management following his playing career and has taken charge of Forest Green Rovers this season.

The ex-midfielder is working alongside former Wrexham goalkeeper Luke McNicholas and has been discussing his start to life at the club this week.

McNicholas joined Forest Green from Wrexham in July and has quickly established himself as their new number one.

The 25-year-old only made three senior appearances for the Dragons but has already started 14 league matches this season.

Forest Green are second in the National League going into the weekend, and Savage has been discussing his stint in the dugout so far.

As per the Leader, he said: “I’m a football person who’s been addicted to, and obsessed with, football all his life. I don’t fear failure – never have.

“My two boys, Charlie and Freddie, said to me when I was going to take the job, ‘what’s the worst that can happen? You can get the sack, but give it your best shot’.

“I said: ‘Do you know what? Yeah, that’s right.’

“It’s a brilliant football club run by passionate, caring people who want you to do well, so I’ve embraced everything.”

Wrexham transfer interest in Charlie Savage

As mentioned by Robbie, one of his sons is Reading midfielder Charlie Savage.

Wrexham were interested in signing Savage over the summer, but a move did not come to pass.

The 22-year-old remained at Reading and has so far made 11 League One appearances this term.

The Red Dragons, meanwhile, strengthened their midfield department with the additions of Ben Sheaf, George Thomason and Lewis O’Brien.
