Wrexham were superb in the promotion run-in to eventually finish second in League One.

After a slight dip in form during the month of January, Phil Parkinson’s side showed an incredible level of consistency to eventually gain a historic promotion to the Championship.

Now attentions turn to building a Wrexham squad capable of competing in the second tier and Parkinson has confirmed players will depart in order to make room for his 25 players available to register.

Wrexham could target free agents having been linked with the likes of Tom Lawrence and Tom Cairney but Ryan Longman’s latest comments shows Parkinson why he needs to continue with his previously successful transfer strategy.

Ryan Longman praises Wrexham’s ‘experienced’ players

Speaking to the Leader, January signing Longman has praised the impact of the more ‘experienced’ players during the League One promotion run-in.

Longman stated: “There’s a lot of boys in that changing room that have experienced promotions and they’ve got that understanding of the game and how to see it all out,

“I’m 24 and I’d never been in a promotion side before so just being in and around them, and having them in the changing room and feeding off them, learning off them, has been massive for my game as well.

“They are really experienced and knowing that they’ve been in them situations before, you feed off them because they make you feel calm and you feel like you can go out and perform.

“They are an unbelievable talent and some of them have had incredible careers, and they still want to do well, they want to keep going. Hopefully they do and hopefully we can carry on the way we’re going.”

Phil Parkinson must continue transfer strategy of signing ‘experienced’ players

Parkinson’s transfer strategy in the past has been to sign more ‘experienced’ players from teams in higher divisions.

Wrexham’s contract offer to Cairney shows that they may be the plan once again this summer and Longman’s comments have proven why it is such a successful one.

The Red Dragons will still need a good blend of freshness and youthful exuberance in their recruitment however, the likes of Matty James and James McClean can once again be big characters in the dressing room.

The Championship will undoubtedly provide its challenges to the team next season but a good summer of recruitment can mean that the squad have the tools to cope.
