Wrexham have never been shy about spending money under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, as was evident with the addition of Sam Smith.

Wrexham are a historic club with a rich history but Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are looking well on course to take them to new heights.

The Red Dragons ended their 15-year spell in the National League in 2023 and could be playing Championship football later in 2025.

Phil Parkinson’s side are still in the race for automatic promotion from League One but are four points off second at present.

In turn, Rob and Ryan, despite a play-off place likely guaranteed at this point, once again backed their club well in the 2025 January transfer window,

As well as signing experienced striker Jay Rodriguez and Championship-proven Ryan Longman, Wrexham broke their transfer record for Sam Smith.

The number nine already has 11 League One goals to his name in 2024/25 – nearly twice as many as any other Wrexham striker.

And after making his debut less than 24 hours after signing, Wrexham fans were impressed by Smith versus Crawley Town.

Now, the 26-year-old has opened up on his move to Wales, revealing he’s already been in contact with Reynolds and McElhenney, as per Leader Live.

He said: “Yes, they [Rob and Ryan] have been in touch which is quite surreal.

“I’m just excited to be here with the project and everything that’s going on.”

Sam Smith praises Wrexham project

Smith does go against Wrexham’s recent recruitment model of signing players who are already proven at a level higher.

However, his ability to find the back of the net should be just what they need to get over the line in the final few months of the season.

After joining Wrexham, Smith expressed sympathy for his former club but also revealed his excitement at joining the Wrexham project.

He said: “I think everyone is aware of Reading’s situation. It’s an amazing football club and I just feel for everyone involved there.

“But when an opportunity comes up like this and with everything going on there, it was something I couldn’t turn down.

“The project they’re building here, I think everyone would want to be a part of it. We’ve got a good squad and a good manager, and I’m excited to be here.”
