Troy Deeney could be left with egg on his face after what he said about Wrexham earlier this season

Wrexham have surprised everyone this season to emerge as promotion contenders in League One, despite having only been promoted from League Two last season.

Wrexham currently find themselves in 2nd place of the League One table. They’re one point ahead of Wycombe Wanderers after Wrexham drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic in their previous game.

Wycombe boss Mike Dodds says the advantage lies with Wrexham in the race to join Birmingham City in securing automatic promotion from League One this season as both the Chairboys and Wrexham have just four games left.

Promotion this season would make for a third-straight promotion for Wrexham. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney may not believe their luck since taking control of the club back in early 2021, and they can only dream about where the club could be in a few year’s time.

Troy Deeney’s Premier League prediction for Wrexham

Wrexham spent 15 dark years in the National League. It looked as though the club was destined to be a non-league team but now they have much bigger aspirations, with many fans and pundits alike even backing Wrexham to eventually be promoted to the Premier League under Reynolds and McElhenney.

Right now, the club remains in League One. But promotion is almost in the bag and after that, there’s no reason why Wrexham can’t start dreaming about possible Premier League football. But earlier in the season, Troy Deeney said Wrexham will ‘never’ play in the Premier League.

In fact, Deeney bet £1000 that Wrexham won’t be promoted to the top flight in the next five years. But with Wrexham having almost secured promotion to the Championship, Deeney could be left with egg on his face sooner or later, and with £1000 less in his pocket.

It seems like a two-horse race between Wrexham and Wycombe in the race for 2nd with Stockport County in 4th now four points behind Wycombe, and Charlton Athletic in 4th five points behind.

Both Wrexham and Wycombe play on Friday. Phil Parkinson’s side are at home to Bristol Rovers whilst Wycombe head to Bolton Wanderers, then having three games left to secure automatic promotion.

For the Dragons in particular, promotion to the Championship could see them spend big in the summer with Wrexham having £38million of headroom, in the event of promotion to the second tier, because of different PSR rules in the Championship.

After that, Premier League football could be a matter of when, not if, for Wrexham.
